First PCP... nova freedom and some pellet experiments

I have just bought a used Nova Freedom. It is holding air, and has already been sent back to manufacturer to be fixed for the leaking issue, which is apparently the pump 0-ring. I want to get in front of this and wonder are fellow owners doubling up on silicone oil in the barrel, and are you pumping methodically, not fast? Are there pictures or video how to take the gun apart to see if the o-rings are properly lubed? I understand some are shipped "dry". Thanks for any input in advance.

Set your gun’s hammer spring up to shoot it’s best at 2500psi. I top back off to 2500psi after 3 shots and takes 4-5 pumps each shot so 15 pumps total for 3 shot with in 5-7 FPS of each other. After running my gun this way I have put 1200-1500 shots through it with out a pump issue.

I found pumping above 2500-2800psi produces a lot of heat that causes the piston seal to deteriorate.

I really enjoyed shooting my nova freedom I received from Buds just before Thanksgiving 2018 . Sadly had to send it in for repair. ATI acknowledged receiving it Dec. 21, 2018 got email reply from Ty Traphagen-Frericks at ATI Jan. 11, 2019 my air rifle is just in queue to be worked on now. As of today Jan.17, 2019 still no update. Reason for sending it in was pump seal and posible spring broke; could hear it binding sometimes when pumped. Butch (AGN member) was kind enough to reply to my email and give his advice prior to sending it in for repair. Hope to have more to update soon.

E30 glad I could help. Did you wonder what the cap under the barrel was for? That cap it where they fill the other end of the air camber with nitrogen to be an accumulator per say. That’s how you get from 0 to 2000 psi in a short amount of strokes.

Hey Butch

Can you tell me more about that cap under the barrel?

My gun arrived yesterday and the cap was not even finger tight.

Is this cause for concern?

That is for the pre-charge. It makes the gun easier to pump up. There are threads involving this by people that have much more knowledge about the subject than I. I believe your owners manual will have some information also.

Thanks Android

Yes the manual was helpful enough for me to realize that simply keeping the cap screw tight would be a good thing.

And most likely no harm done when it was loose.

Moot point now however, considering the pump issues with the new rifle

You make a good point, Android, about asking ATI to retrofit better O rings

I will not be shy about doing that once we have a conversation established

Their first (only) e-mail reply said they would "be glad to have one of their gunsmiths look at it"

That's a bit cryptic especially considering it is a new rifle.,and they have purchase detail & serial number

No mention of warranty from them,BTW

I'll keep on with and keep you posted

I had to take the valve assembly out of my parts bought Freedom because the leak was at the bottom of the pressure tube. Yes, I am aware to the point of sickness that the manufacturer printed clearly on the side of the gun”DO NOT REMOVE”. I didn’t have a choice because it is a parts gun and there is no warranty. The problem that I found was the brass valve assembly corroded, turned green from the moisture in the compressed air and caused a type of putty...not an O-ring to fail. There is however a clear o-rind at the front of the valve assembly that could also be leaking too because it was dried up and starting to crack. If anyone has knowledge of the type of putty they used and size and type/ hardness of the clear o-ring, and wouldn’t mind informing me, I would be grateful. My intention with this gun is to fix it and gift it to a new shooter. I have several Liberty’s and other PCPs and really don’t have the shoulders left anymore for the pumping required to use this gun as designed. I found the leak using the fill prob. I was/is substantial. I tried an o-ring and even ballistic putty/Duct seal with zero results. The putty from the factory was green but as I said earlier about corrosion, could have been turned green because of it. The gun is pretty straight forward as far as the pump goes. I replaced the pump seals even though the original seal looks more like a rubber sleeve than an o-ring but did double the o-rings just incase and lubed them liberally with silicon oil/grease. Thanks
