First focal plane vs “traditional “ reticle

It is personal preference. I agree with you bubblerboy about knowing how to use the scope makes a big difference. Second focal plane is just as easy to use if you make a dope card and dial in drop. I use dope cards and click adjustment so ffp and sfp has no bearing and both are just as easy to use for me in any condition or magnification.

I actually have a vortex viper pst 6-24 ffp scope. I still dont use the hold over points. I use my dope card and click in the drop. Another thing I like about this method is how much easier it is to hold off correctly for wind. Since I am using my crosshair because my range is dialed in I can use my horizontal subtensions for wind knowing I am exactly at 3 moa hold over. If you are using hold over and need 6 moa for drop and theres wind you have to guess if you are actually 3 moa or 2.75 moa over. Again personal preference. The other down side to ffp that might be less of an issue at airgun range is that most ffp reticles are thicker than sfp reticles when the upper side of power is used. When I am trying to hit a target at 1,000 yds or a small target thats 6” at 600 yards I want as thin of a reticle as possible. Again just what I prefer. I have a couple gen2 viper pst sfp scopes and I would trade out my ffp viper pst for another sfp pst in a heart beat.
