Royale 500 with Lothar Walther poly barrel

Well the saga continues, I ordered this .22 Lothar Walther polygon unchoked barrel blank in February. Just got it a Month or so ago and shopped around for a machine shop to get it turned to fit the Royale action. Found a place not too far away, but they were very busy so a few patient Weeks later and some worrying of course that something might go wrong or whatever. I'll probably cold blue it this Weekend.

Picked it up this AM and brought my breech block with me to make sure it slid home, all is good!

So I got home and it's been killing me for Months waiting to find out how much power it'll make. I was able to just crack 45FPE with the 18.5 inch ST barrel, and with the added 5.5 inches or so of barrel I was hoping for a nice little boost.

So I ran a few over the Chrony and got

Monster 25.4gr 920-930 47-48FPE

H&N Piledriver 30gr 880-885 for a fist bumping 53+FPE

I was hoping for close to 50 but getting 53+ I'm stoked, off to the range to see how it shoots!

Well not too bad for a start, these are at 100m with baracuda power and monsters. I only had about 30 monsters left and forgot the baracuda match at home.

Hopefully once the barrel seasons itll tighten up. I'll be happy with 1-1.5 inch groups at 100m at this power level. Piledrivers, 18.1s and ultra shock heavy shot pretty well too.

I want to try some of the rat sniper slugs at some point too.

I’d be happy with that at 100m !. I had a LW polygon barrel on a hw100 .22 and it improved just shooting and cleaning. It only ever took 1 or 2 shots after clearing to be accurate again.

Its always a bit nerve wracking when you take your new barrel out for the first time. Wondering if all the work and dollars and time have been worth it. Well looks like your Royal will be a match for any new airgun out there! Well done.

Thanks guys, and yeah it (the cf bottle) was actually touching a bit when I went out and shot yesterday. Watched Jurassic Park 1 last night and sanded it down the tiny bit it needed to clear and polished it all up.

Today I did a cold blue on it, turned out pretty good for the first time doing it. Got some blue loctite as well and locked down the barrel inlets.

Tight but it clears

After polishing before blue

Started getting it dialed, went over the border to the land of freedom today and picked up my NSA slugs. This is all 100m I didn't shoot any shorter distance today.

Great results with 27gr NSA and Baracuda Match

Right at the end I tried some 18.1s shooting HOT, 1040+FPS and they did quite well. You can see the big round hole compared to the pointed and slippery NSA slugs.

I still have a bag of the 28gr hollowpoint (100) and another 30 or so of the 27s, but so far I would definitely order more of the 27's. I shot some monsters and got some beasts but they are not as good, will shoot 3 good ones then send the next 6 inches away.

I'll keep working on it!

Very impressive! And by the way, I haven't seen a piece of walnut like that on an FX for a long time...that rifle must be quite a few years old. What a beauty! Congrats and keep us posted as you go. Did you get the X barrels yet?

Thanks Chuck!

It's a grade 2 stock I think the stamp from Minelli inside did say 2015 so it was waiting a few years for daddy to take her home. No I didn't get the barrels yet, still tied up at the border for "further processing". Pretty ridiculous, but I'll have to wait till I get my hands on a Boss action as there's not enough meat to machine it down to fit a Royale before I can use it unfortunately.

Great results. So the sub moa groups are the nsa 27g and the barracuda match? Is the twist rate the 1:17.7 on your barrel? It may be a little slow for the monsters and beasts. I wouldn’t think that is an issue when it shoots slugs ,barracudas and 18g jsbs like that! You’ll have a choice of projectile for most scenario’s. Can you close the port down to shoot the JSB’s a bit slower?

Be watching with interest and thanks for sharing your results.

Yeah thats with those and that is indeed the twist rate. Yes I can easily just give a turn back on the hammer spring to lower FPS a bit, but the beasts I was only getting 810 or so (50fpe) and tried the Monsters anywhere from 930-850 with not much luck. But again this is at 100m, maybe at 50m it's still ok.

Like you said I'm very happy to have a decent selection 18-21-27gr ammo that shoots great, and those 28gr boat tails that shoot well too have a BC of .09!

Eventually I'd like to cast my own for this.

Wow!! Impressive results out of that lothar walther! And great job on the machining and bluing as well! So what kind of velocity are you getting out of the 27gr nsa slugs and what about the shots per fill? I'm guessing about 50-60 shots maybe? And the nsa slugs you're talking about are hollow points?

Keep us updated on your progress, i'll for sure say tuned ;)

Take care, Manuel

Thanks Manuel and Bob, for the record I had a local machine shop do the cutting but I did the crown and leade myself. I chronied most of what I shot today.

Looks like 870 or so with the 27gr. My Mom gave me her generation 1 Ipad so I use it with my Chrony. It's ancient and won't update anymore and I can't for the life of me get it to connect to my email. Anyways here's some pictures of the screen showing a few strings. Sorry about the quality, and one the 27gr string the last shot I shot a Baracuda and screwed up the SD and ES for that group as you see.

Shot count depends on power and I wasn't keeping track but I'd say 40-50 when shooting like this, 150 Bar reg, HST almost maxed. It takes as much air in .22 as .25 when setup like this. I can dial it back to shoot more reasonable I did a string of 120 shots a few weeks ago with 18.1's around 780-800 FPS and still had 20 Bar left above reg.

Sorry about the quality!

This is the 27gr and yes the hollowpoint

Then gave another little turn on the HST and shot some 28gr boat tail. (Shot 20 is a Baracuda not 28gr)

Baracuda string, these are the 5.53 head size version of them.

This is some really interesting stuff. I've toyed with the idea of doing this with a 22 barrel for the wildcat to get it that last little bit to be competitive for BR competition. Watching your progress gives me renewed interest. Did you buy the barrel directly from LW, and how long did it take to get? Was it something they stocked? Thanks. Sylvan
