Finally Got the Raptor .22 to shoot straight

Hi all,

Long time no see, I wanted to give a quick update on my Raptor .22. I haven't have much time to shoot it or tune it. But I finally did it this weekend. I was able to put 5 shots at 39 yards in the same hole and repeat it 4 different times in the row that morning. Shooting the 18.13 JSB at 940fps. Getting the hammer and buffer to cooperate was not an easy task, but we are there.

Here is one of the results

I am finally proud owner of a Raptor that can shoot well. I will be starting to use slugs and see what she can do. My Black Widow is now ready to draw blood.

Would like to hear about the journey and how you got to this point.

@Felixs, I will try to get that on writing. It has been a long tuning and balancing act to get there.

Good to see you back Eric!

Renz

Thanks @Regarval, it's good to be back

Whew, that's some great accuracy! Glad to see you back, it's been a while!

Stoti

Thank you @stoti, it felt good when I finally got the results I was looking for.

I'll safely assume you meant 4 yards and not 40.

Jokes aside, great job both shooting that group and tuning your raptor in. Did you weigh or sort those pellets or straight from the tin?

Thanks @Ackuric, that was straight of a new tin. Not sorted or weighted

Oh and that is a slug barrel too.

Just as an FYI ...... ONLY difference between the JSAR / TJ's barrels in SLUG or PELLET specifications is that of the Leade / Freebore depth.

Ideally pellets chamber with head of pellet into the rifling and slugs Not requiring a bit of Jump before engaging rifling.

A pellet will shoot from a slug barrel well providing the free bore aligns the pellet well and guides it square & true into the rifling w/o damage.

Loading a SLUG into a pellet spec barrel can prove troublesome if the fit is a tad snug to rifling creating a difficult to close cocking lever and at some times reduced velocity at an equal pressure to a free bored barrel allowing jump.

Thank you for that clarification @Motorhead, I didn't know that. I thought it was mostly the choke that was the main difference. We learn everyday. ;)

They really F'd up the throat in the 17" TJ in the Mini .30 that I have. First, the muzzle crown job straight up sucked:

I was able to clean that up, but then I realized that there was a second problem. They reamed the chamber to the groove diameter SO deep, that a flat base 49.5gr NSA slug doesn't hit the lands in the throat until it falls 1.23" into the chamber!

The pellet probe only drives the base of the projectile in ~0.52" - leaving well over 1/2" of free bore causing significant jump and thus the barrel would never be accurate. It was shooting around 3-4" at 50y with pellets and 4.5-5" slugs.

I contacted JSAR (aka Jacob) and asked for an RMA for the defects. He agreed, and I shipped him my barrel on my own dime - and it was signed for on May 13th. Here we are now on June 23rd, he still has my barrel and he no longer responds to my emails. I told him forget about the replacement - send me the original barrel back so I have some recourse with the original owner, but won't even oblige.

I wouldn't be surprised if that barrel winds up in another customer's rifle 👎👎👎

Actually ... not surprised it now sits unresolved. That does SUCK !!

Getting them to prep barrels correctly was on my TOO DO list ... but circumstances of my continued involvement changed all that.

Hope you get it back !! Not all is lost if you do. CUT OFF the breech end of barrel to get the throat / free bore where it is correct and re-machine the rest and you end up just a tad shorter OAL. While agree your SHOULD NOT need too ... it will correct whats FUBAR.

I would think at the asking price that it would shoot straight or, accurately right out the box? The “finally” part doesn’t inspire confidence. JSAR is really lucky to have such a loyal customer base. At a certain price point PCPs need to be ready to go at first unboxing. Otherwise why spend the big coin?

I do agree, but you still get a nice machine at 2 thirds of the price of a crown or impact. I also wanted to tune the gun to it's finest that I could. That said I didn't much time to spend or had any knowledge about the balanced valves and I quickly understood that. I could have been happy with what I had. I just wanted more and I did get it. It just isn't an easy road to get there, now that I have done it an understand the concept, I can detuned mine and get it back just by using my chrono and some pellets in way less time. I know what it should sound and shoot. JSAR isn't a multinational business and we have to respect that. Going from custom made to production work isn't an easy one.

And it is my personal pride to own a made in USA gun. I think the Raptor, as my trusty Vet will stay in the available AG in my house. Maybe the incoming impact can be a challenger for first place with the Vet but I don't know. The wildcat didn't, so we will see.

R&D product...streamline production while developing quality controls, beta test first run thoroughly, work out kinks that presented themselves, and ones that didn't present themselves...launch product. Why is that so hard for companies to do?

JSAR shot themselves in the foot, if they are around to both provide airguns and support in the next 5 years, I'll be impressed considering how terrible their first guns launch went, and is still going...nearly 2 years later.
