Filled too fast?

Me and my dad have been shooting this afternoon. He came inside to fill off my great white. He cracked the valve and I watched the inline pressure guage jump from 150 bar straight to 220 bar. I believe I said....."damn, that was a little too fast." He admittingly agreed. He fills from his tigershark with the same valve assembly.....so he just had a brainfart.
We walked back outside and while he was loading his magazine we could hear a noticeable hissing sound. Its coming up through the transfer port. Big leak.
My gut tells me this is directly related to that rapid fill. I believe the spike in air pressure burnt/wrecked a seal. Sound about right? The rifle is a Wolverine C-Type .177. The leak happened immediately after that fill. I guess my question is was this coincidence......or did the rapid fill cause this? I always fill super slow and so does he. It was just an accident on his part I guess.

"MANICMINER"man how is it possible that you are clueless, with all those accuracy points?
It is never a bad thing to back up ones reasoning, even if you are knowledgeable on the subject.
It can save you a lot of headache or just make the process easier because of tips you receive.
Especially when dealing with dangerous stuff like HPA.

I haven't had this happen any of my rifles before, but I'm interested to see if others have?

I don't have anything of value to add to the valve discussion...But I can say Marksman ( David ) has all those accuracy points because he is helpful and an asset to the forum, and just a good dude . ...Some folks ( not David for sure ) evidently are just here to troll or something. Maybe these folks didn't get enough hugs as children ? Maybe they were prolonged BedWetters . It's anybody's guess what their problem is .

And he's not clueless he just isn't a jerk know it all :) ..And don't take himself too seriously .

Lol. Your too much Joe. I have to agree here. I believe that sudden compression flash heated and melted a seal. Wont know till I tear her down. Manicminer......there was a time I was sponsored by both Browning and Winchester. I have personally met Carlos Hathcock on several occassions. ESPN interviewed me in 1996 at the NRA Whittington Center in Raton New Mexico. Thats just the tip of the iceburg and wasnt the first time either. I hate "bragging". Im going to stop there.
I know how to shoot. I can teach others to shoot. Im only a year into airguns. Give me a break.

I have a similar problem with my Royale 400. I didn't seat the foster quick fill properly and a few seconds into filling there was a loud "pop" & the fill whip shot off. Since then it won't hold air for more than an hour. I think I damaged one of the o-rings in the quick fill area, but that has yet to be determined.

GoodtogoI was thinking my fill hose was a "slow fill hose". It came with my great white? Not really sure but I fill slowly anyway.

My hose is a slow fill hose too....as well as the slow fill valve setup. I even opted for the second tank pressure guage and full armor. Its fully loaded. Just got off the phone with my dad. Im not sure the fill even caused this. The fill was from like 170bar to 220bar. The needle never went past 220.....its just got to 220 fast. I just happened to be watching him fill it. If it was heat related from a fast fill.....then why isnt the male foster on the rifle leaking. Seems like that would have gotten the hot air way more than the valve seal. After thinking on it more......I believe it may have just been dumb luck. The rifle is still new with less than 500 shots. It is very accurate and otherwise a very fine rifle. I will get to the bottom of it in short order when Im off again next week. In the meantime he still has his compatto.

Just a update. We filled the bottle to 220bar 2 times and dry fired it down to 150bar each time. Its been holding air for more than 24 hours with no sign of leaking whatsoever. Some microscopic particle must have cleared itself. Ive had this happen before with a new rifle that went on to never leak again. I believe it worked itself out. I now believe this was unrelated to the fill. It was just dumb luck I guess.

I had a similar experience a couple years ago with an AF Talon... filled to quick, followed by a leak. Like you, I dry fired it down (Randy @ R&L, gave me that advice) and no more leak! My working theory is, the rapid fill flexed the seal just enough to allow a spec of crap to get wedged in there. I haven't experienced the issue with any of my PCP's since.
