field target pellet selection at major competitions

It certainly seems that competitive field target shooters like JSB/Air Arms. The WFTC 2019 site shows the selections of those who have registered, and apart from "TBD", the Czech pellets are dominant, as they seem to be in all the similar reports from major competitions.

Jerry,

I've found, after weighing my pellets, checking headsize with your Pelletgage, and everything else I do to pellets, I have kicked Air Arms and JSB'S to the curb for their lack of consistency and quality control. Just by going on weight alone, the spreads for both brands of pellets, (8.44 gr.) have been atrocious. The JSB'S are anywhere from 8.08 gr. on up to 8.78 gr. The Air Arms were not much better, with my spreads being between 8.20 gr. and 8.74 gr. Couple this low/high weight with headsize that's small/large, you can have inconsistency in speed of upwards of 50 FPS.

I've been working with H&N in the last year or so, to help them develop products with higher qualities than past, and it's starting to show. H&N has really stepped up their game, they are my go to pellet at the moment with the Field Target Trophy at 8.64 grains. I still have to weigh them, but I get much more consistent head sizes from an average tin.

Id think you d get a better "view" if you included say, the last 3 years of data from all the matches (at least that posted this data) in the US. Jsut relying on 1 international match is going to skew the results toward pellets readily availabe "over there"

Hello, Dan, see link below my earlier post about the WFTC 2017, I tabulated those online reports, and found JSB to be used overwhelmingly. Field Target is much more popular in UK (and in many other European countries) than in USA, the best shooters these past few years are Welch. And they have ready access to a big variety of pellet brands. Most all of my acquaintances in FT competition in Texas and NC shoot JSB or Air Arms.

And I have seen similar reports with JSB dominating in US competitive shoots for benchrest.

Tom - I do agree that JSB still has issues with consistency lot to lot. And I hope that H&N will indeed step up the competition. I believe they are the most likely major manufacturer to implement the process controls we'd like to see.

Jerry,

I believe you're right about that, recently H&N got all new tooling, and moved to a new location not too long ago. Basically, started over, if you will.

Just for an FYI, I've been working with H&N for about a year or so, to help bring back the quality of their Sniper Medium .177 line, and it's been a slow and tedious process. When it was first offered, the quality and wind bucking abilities were second to none, and all the dies were damaged by a worker, and they were never the same after that. It's a work in progress.

As far as comparing them with JSB'S or Air Arms, in my eyes, there is no comparison, with any of the lots anymore. With JSB'S, I have to sort though about 4-5 tins to get the proper weight and headsize, just to get 300-350 projectiles for a 2 day match. With Air Arms, I have to sort 3-4 tins to get the same. With H&N Field Target Trophy, I can usually get those same numbers from 1 1/2 tins. I found that the weight of the nominal 8.64 grain pellet is usually between 8.56 -8.70 grains, much more consistent than the numbers I listed for JSB'S and Air Arms before. Head size wise, I keep well over 80% of the H&N's, but with the JSB'S and Air Arms, I keep less than 10%, and that's after they are weighed.

Looks like you'll see a lot more people using H&N's, as their quality control is stepping up to the game, where as, in my eyes, JSB'S seem to be the same old crap, with Air Arms not far behind. These have been my observations over the last few years or so, which is also the reason that I'm investing in swaging dies to make my own pellets, at much better quality than can be offered by any company out there.

Dan, this recent FT match is not a major, but note that several of these competitors are quite experienced, and can easily obtain any pellet they might wish.

27 competitors, 26 shooting Air Arms or JSB. I stand by the original post comment. AA/JSB currently enjoys a predominant position with competitive airgun shooters. The other pellet manufacturers are nearly shut out.

!st of all,,Thx Pelletgage for the info. Are'nt a couple of those brands made by the same manufacturer, I know JSB makes the pellets for AirArms and probably FX. The difference being slightly altered percentages of ingredients used to mix in with the batch of lead. And availability may affect what gets used more. PA does'nt carry FX pellets,AoA does[which I'd like to try by the way] but I buy exclusively from PA. I just don't like the idea of the shipping hazards for the distance. AZ to OH
