Fancy pigeon

This photo requires a bit of explanation.

A friend of mine lives about 10 miles west of town. About 3 years ago, his neighbor died, and his widow turned loose all of his fancy pigeons he kept when she moved out of the house. As a result of that, there are all sorts of fancies flying all over town, including at one of my permissions.

Last year, I did shoot two just like this one. Then today, I got the remaining two. One dropped into a neighbor's yard, and she wasn't home so I couldn't ask permission to pick it up. The other one didn't even move ofter it was shot. Although you can't tell by looking, the shot was a heart lung from the looks of the exit wound you can barely see in the photo. The distance was just under 75 yards.

The gun s a bottled and JDS regulated Marauder in .25 caliber, using AirArms 25.4 grain pellets at 910 fps.

I don't think they're feed. They have all been flocking with the regular rock pigeons for several years. In that flock are several all white ones, but I haven't managed to hit any of them yet.

Part of the issue with respect to their numbers... The local acreage is reserved mostly for show cattle who consume a lot more grain than range cattle. And it just isn't pigeons. Starlings, grackles, all manner of doves, and millions of black birds. It is an air gunner's Eden!
