Fanboys and Girls...

When I started reading the forums about PCPs. It was bewildering, I knew the guns looked sweet, but beyond that, no knowledge. So I did a lot of reading and then noticed the fanboys. Recommending the “flavor of the week” and all those chiming in how they had just ordered theirs. Lots of hype, then fast forward a few months or a year and a lot of these talked up guns are in the classifieds or you hear about the issues that were initially glossed over. While I understand recommending proven product, I don’t understand how so many get worked up over some new PCPs that have not withstood the test of time. They go as far as recommending the PCP after a few shooting sessions! I applaud their optimism and wish them well, but I’ve seen the same pattern in other hobbies and am wary of it. And the side lever vs. bolt action thing? It’s a non issue, buy what you like. Bolt actions have been around for a long time. I wouldn’t discount a gun base on it. Side levers have more moving parts, pins, linkages than a bolt action. Ever hear about pins dropping out a bolt action?

First adopters, shills or not give most a look at something they might not or may never own. They deal with problems of first run items and if honest divulge the products shortcomings. We should be thankful to them for vetting these products.

I've been a wait and see how it goes guy for some time. I don't often make impulse buys and will wait a good long time before making a purchase. If everyone was like me no product would be succesfull. So endure the hype, do your due diligence and buy what you like.

WELL IM WAITING FOR 600 CALIBER SPACE GUN WITH SELECT FIRE MISSILES, PHOTON TORPEDOES AND LASER BEAMS. Part of learning is figuring out what doesn’t work and this also creates a boutique market a niche of people making improvements and sharing the fruits of their frustration either for sale or just as fyi . This for many started with a Crossman pump bb gun or a Red Ryder and now we have all this my what a wonderful thing to pick and choose and learn.......

I'm always as honest and upfront as I can be. I make mistakes and overlook things sometimes. Chalk it up to human error or me being me.

I usually cut my own path, so it is a bit odd owning several guns that do have a lot of hype. But I always do my homework. So, the nicest gun (to me) that I own is beyond its 3rd iteration. It's been tested and tweaked by its manufacturer quite a good bit. So, it's not a new gun. (although it is). I've also had it torn down, re-worked. Fiddled with to no end. Pushed well past its factory limits, and shot extensively. Close to 8000 shots in 7 months. For how many other guns I have and do shoot. That's impressive (for me). But I've had no real issues with that one. Only exactly what I paid for. And honestly more.

Hype or not, there is a bit of a lottery with anything it seems. And it also seems a decent amount of problems are resulting from end user. So, as always, read between the lines. Take everything with a grain of salt.

i have loved the looks of the compatto since i first seen one. i have followed many of your posts and helped me on my decision to buy one recently based on your positive comments and follow up reports on your compatto.

so far it is everything i have expected. havent got much trigger time. been cold here in NE SD. -12 right now.

I once posted a topic on a new airgun that was soon to be released. I ended changing my mind and another member sent me a private message saying they were available. I told him I changed my mind and that I would wait until all the bugs were worked out and went with another airgun. His response; "Interesting". I too don't jump on the "latest, greatest" bandwagon.

What’s wrong with being a fanboy or girl? A person can’t like something and brag about it if it’s new? To each their own...

Agree. Sometimes amazing how much inherent wisdom floats around out there. There is nothing wrong with waiting for something to be proven just as there is nothing wrong with being an early adopter of new things. One isn't superior to the other, just different. You don't need to make anyone happy other than yourself.

Accurate.

No one said it’s “wrong” or “right”. Bragging and showing off something new is fine by me. I just don’t get recommending something after having it a few weeks, shooting it a few times, etc. Oh and theirs nothing “wrong” with being a fanboy or girl.... I learn from everyone here, so it’s all good.

The flip side of that coin is disparaging a brand or type of gun generically from a single bad example or limited experience. Anything can fail, even the best engineered. I have no problem with a review of something after a short time as long as such a time of use period is noted. Longer term use reviews are harder to come by. It seems to relate directly to the question of getting something newly designed vs. waiting for other people to test it out. Nothing wrong with either approach but nothing inherently intelligent about either approach either.

Should we wait 5 years before w say anything? I tend to align more with the wait and see crowd but nothing wrong with jumping in with both feet either. If you got it, spend it!

No suggestions were made... only one person’s observations. Free will is a great thing... am loving my PCP journey the guns consistently surpass my accuracy expectations.

The same as your "sharing of observations," I don't see a problem with folks sharing their thoughts as they get to know a new rifle. In fact, that is a large part of why I come to the forum. It's great to be able to hear about what guns are out there in the marketplace, the features they have or don't have, and the real-world opinions of people actually shooting them and not getting paid to paint a pretty picture about the gun.
