Hello AirgunNation Peoples,
Sometimes success results only from following through on a good idea. Well, this success story is about setting up my third FX airgun to be a slug shooter! You see, I have two other FX’s shooting slugs well, the .22 caliber DreamPup and the .25 cal Crown. This time it is the .25 caliber FX Wildcat MKII that has entered the slug-gun arena with extremely good accuracy with Nielsen Specialty Ammo 26.8 grain hollow-point slugs.
The Idea:
Since 2018 my standard Wildcat MKII .25 with the 600mm pellet “A” liner, Huma-air regulator (125bar) has been launching Air Arms Diabolo 25.4grains @ 950fps (50fpe) and JSB 33.95grains @ 850fps (54fpe) with superb accuracy. The idea came when ordering .25 caliber NSA’s online for my Crown. Noticed the NSA 26.8grain .250 HP-slugs, and thought... “Those slugs are only 1.4 grains heavier than the Air Arms 25.4’s that my Wildcat MKII .25 loves?” I wondered if I dropped a 600mm .25 cal slug liner in the Wildcat, will it be able to shoot these slugs well? The answer is “YES”!!! Along with some harmonic tuning that is all it really took..
The Setup:
First, ordered and installed a .25 600mm slug liner. Second, like mentioned above my Wildcat MKII has been Huma regulated for almost two years with the reg pressure @ 125 bar, but with the choke of the slug liner being tighter then the pellet liner I had to raise the Huma regulator by 10 bar (now @ 135 bar) to maintain similar velocity and give the hammer spring tension nut about a half round turn inward (clockwise).
Chronograph (2x) Full 8 Round Magazine Shot Strings:
Accuracy:
A handful of simple self-explanatory photos of 5 and 8 shot groups, shot at my backyard range @ painted gong targets. Using Nielsen Specialty Ammo 26.8 HP- Slugs with the Wildcat MKII .25 standard. (600mm .25 slug liner & 135bar Huma Reg Setup) Distances range from 25, 30, 50, and 100 yards.
Wind today:
Holdover was only 1.5 mils @ 100 yards. Using the Hawke Sidewinder FFP 4-16x50.
Put a full 8 round magazine of NSA 26.8’s out there for the 100 yards demonstration. For good measure!!
Conclusion:
My FX Wildcat MKII .25 caliber has always been a unsung favorite, but with it’s new ability to shoot slugs it deserves all praises due! It was easier to setup for slugs than my DreamPup or Crown. A sweet bonus, with the 600mm slug liner, it still shoots the Air Arms Diabolo 25.4’s (@950fps) and the JSB 33.95’s (@850fps) with the same accuracy! I get 56 shots per fill (7 full - 8 shot magazines) from a 230 bar fill down to reg pressure 135 bar. So far I have taken out a few Robins, two @ 45 yards and one @ 20 yards, the “POP” was ridiculously loud!!! I am super stocked up on NSA slugs for all three of my FX sluggers, so back in the cases until the next hunting trip.
Appreciate your time!
