Evolution of .22 Crown STX to .177 ST

Last year bought a used .22 Crown (AMP reg) in blue laminate. Shot very good with 18.1 JSB, and when I tried the 15.89 it shot great. My last 25M BR with it was 730 in heavy swirling winds. So heavy it kept blowing over my wind flags. But, since I already have two other .22s, Cricket mini and EDGun R3 Long, I decided to covert this Crown to a .177 FT gun.

Bought a .177 ST barrel setup with probe and magazine from an AGN member that had it converted to fit by Ernest. He said he just didn’t use it much, so I bought it from him. He told me that Ernest told him that the ST in .177 was a better performing barrel than the STX. True or not I have no idea.

I installed it on my Crown, and also bought a used synthetic stock that I had hydro dipped Kryptek Mandrake pattern. Installed a CF sleeve over the barrel and added a DonnyFL Tatsu in .25 cal. A new Athlon Midas HMR 2.5-15×50 AHMR MOA scope on FX no limit rings completed the setup (thanks Chuck).

Strangely enough, it didn’t like the JSB 10.3, but loves the H&N Barracuda Match 10.65 in 4.52 head size. Shooting at 885 FPS its a real tack driver. As far as FT, I’ll need to learn that since I have never shot FT other than the EBR version.

I bet you will like the ST barrel. I had a Crown in .22, and it shot well, but I found that the X liner fouled rather quickly. I recently bought a Royale 400, also in .22. Its accuracy is as good as the X liner, and, I've put a tin of pellets through it without cleaning, and with no loss of accuracy yet. I realize that's a population of only 2, hardly a statistically meaningful sample, but I've heard a couple of similar reports. Good luck with it.
