Edgun Matador or FX Wildcat MKII

I'm just going to say that there doesn't appear to be any wrong choice here. Neither company offers a very optimized baffle design in their shroud, however both guns are world class and the presence of a shroud will significantly improve sound attenuation with virtually all moderators. Also, all else being equal, you would expect .22 to be quieter than .25.

I would say pick whichever you like the look of better and don't sweat it. :)

Hope that helps.

Dear Bog...

My Taipan Veteran Long, .25 caliber, produces 60+ fpe with 31 gr Barracuda pellets, and is so quiet all you can hear is the hammer slap. I'm shooting 915-920 fps. The Vet will hit 67 fpe tuned to the max. You will need a soft backstop...Of course you can always back the hammer spring off to reduce the impact noise of the pellet. Actually, 800 - 850 fps, with 25 gr JSB pellets, would be more backyard friendly, and you would still get 40 fpe!

This thing is still 4" shorter than a yard stick!

Not bad for less than $1300.00 shipped. I've owned the $1800+ guns...absolutely no difference in accuracy, but the Vet provides a world of difference in adjustable power!

Regards,

Kindly 'Ol Uncle

i have a wildcat 22 with a donny fl sumo its quiet at the airgun range this past weekend they couldnt believe how quiet it was

Same. .25cal Sumo on a .22. So quiet you think it's 12fpe or broken.

Yup, I use a Koi or a Tanto on my 22 Wildcat. People will say it's a little pop gun until I shoot at something like a tree or a metal fence post. That's when they get real big eyes. LOL

If quiet is really that important to you and you've never shot these guns in person please know that if you ever want to put an aftermarket LDC on either of these guns you need to consider that the cost for the edgun Matador(r5m) is $120-130 for an adapter baffle kit and about $50 for the FX Wildcat mk1 or mk2. You also have more ldc and adapter options including end caps right now for the FX wildcats.

Oh yeah, having owned all 3,

I would choose the Taipan guns. One of the best triggers in the industry and accuracy is equal if not better with cz barrels in 22 and LW barrels in 25 cal.

OH and Taipans are as trouble free as the edguns if not even more trouble free.

And....for turning down power and sound report on the fly the Taipan hammer spring tension can be adjusted externally in the back of the gun easily while the edguns and FX Wildcats require removal of the action from the stock. Not a biggie just good to know.

I can tell you a 25 caliber R5 long doesn't need any moderator. Just stuff the Shroud with some felt and it's super quiet even shooting mk2s at 880 feet per second. I don't know Wildcat but from what I read I would guess the cocking and Trigger is better on the wildcat, but R5 tops it on ease of maintenance and robustness. Although the R5 long is heavier and and more costly than Wildcat take into consideration you don't have the weight or length cost of an LDC that you would need in a while if you wanted to be as quiet as an R5 long.

If I had a .25cal Wildcat to do a comparison with my R5M Standard in .25cal, I would be able to give you my unbiased opinion. The things I do know, I'll share with you.

  • Forward cocking handle which is ambidextrous. I find that I unconsciously use either side depending on the shooting position I'm in. Although not as smooth as a biathlon lever with mechanical advantage, I don't find it hinders performance in getting a quick follow up shot.
  • Anti-Double Load Feature although manual, I've used it on multiple occasions.
  • Ambidextrous Safety.
  • Length: 27.5 inches with offset factory moderator which is very effective for a .25cal.
  • Weight: 6.75 LBS. unscoped. As with most bullpups, the weight is centered at the pistol grip.
  • Aftermarket 1/2"×20 TPI adapter available for attaching your choice of moderators. I feel it's not needed because the factory moderator does an excellent job without adding additional length plus it doesn't look right with the offset factory moderator. With the .25cal, the impact of your target will be about 3-5 times louder than the gun going off.
  • Three built in factory magazine/clip storage under the picatinny rail.
  • 20 MOA rail.
  • Ease of maintenance; A 4mm hex key is all that is needed to take the gun down to its basic features for cleaning. To clean from the breach is done in a pinch.
  • Self-contained air tank is a breeze to remove without degassing.
  • Front Tensioned Barrel; I believe it aids in less POI shifts.
  • Reliability/Ruggedness; Heck!!! You can run it over with a Toyota Land Cruiser. Hopefully Ed releases the synthetic stocks soon. Edguns' make great hunting platforms to swing in the brush.
  • Accuracy; Well, it's a Lothar Walther Barrel. 1/2 inch groups and less at 50 yards is the norm for mine. As most know, LW barrels can shoot a wide range of ammo.
  • Trigger; Mine is set from the factory at about one pound. It's not gritty nor is it heavy. It is very predictable. Some say that the trigger should surprise you but I don't agree. You should know when it's gonna go off. I wouldn't be able to shoot tight groups if the trigger was terrible.
  • Customer Service; Brian from Edgun West is great to deal with. Both Ed and Brian will always chime in here at AGN.
  • Nostalgia; It's an Edgun! I really like Ed's designs and what he and his company stands for.

You can't go wrong in choosing between; Wildcat, Matador or Lelya, Cricket, Vulcan or Veteran. I'd shoot .25. The 33.95gr JSBs will require some extra power to shoot them in the 60 FPE range and I'd say the Cricket, Veteran Long & Matador Long is up for that. But to shoot the 25.39gr JSBs in the 45-50 FPE range any of these will do it well out of the box.

I absolutely love the Vulcan for shooting the 25.39 pellets. Compact, agile, deadly accurate and forward cocking. The Wildcat compact & Lelya has these same attributes as well.

The Veteran and Cricket are great pups. I like the Cricket for power tuning (60+ FPE) and shooting off the bench. The Veterans, all versions, are great bullpups. Its the only pup here with anti-double load. It's got an amazing mag system. If it had forward cocking it would blow all others out of the water.
