Edgun EDMU Mystery Part

So I changed out the EDMU battery following the video instructions on EdgunWest.

Pop the cover with compressed air

Gently extract EDMU circuit board

Depress brass battery clip

Remove battery.

Insert new battery..good EDMU lights up!

Orient the circuit board and snap the cover back on

Test. Replace the tape and screw on end cap.

I was thinking how easy that was and laying next to the bad battery...

Argh! WTF is the little black plastic thing??

The little black plastic thing was glued to the circuit board to protect the 4 wires.

Thx Jack. It does look like something to hold or separate wires, though my part looks slightly different than the one in your pic.

@heavy-impact and mtnGhost

Yep. The Maxell pictured is the battery that died. Replacement is an Energizer.

I'll hang on to the part and glue it back on when the Energizer goes bad. Kind of a pain to blow the cover off with compressed air...that's probably what knocked the part loose in the first place. Must be an easier way to get the cover off and gain access to the circuit board.

I'm curious if yours came with a battery? Mine arrived the other day and did not come with a battery. It was no big deal to buy and install one. I tested it with the cover off and still no worky. Pulling the battery and reinserting got it up and running. I found a copy of the EDMU manual and it said this could happen. Shorting pins 1 and 4 on the card edge connector could also fix hung code if the battery insertion interrupted the initialization.

@jack.K

OK I was looking at the part the wrong way. I see how it would go. Doh!

@joer

I purchased my R5 used on the AGN classifieds so it had a battery installed. Not sure if the previous owner swapped it out. For me it lasted around 8 months. We'll see how long the Energizer goes. As soon as I popped the battery in, the EDMU went thru its startup routine. I guess the loose part wasn't critical..yet.

Update on battery life..

A new Energizer lithium battery only lasted a little over a year. Kind of lame considering the R5 did not get used between 04jan20 an 01jun21. I checked air pressure in the gun maybe 4 time between those dates. No way the battery should have been bad. I had a Honda key fob with the same style battery and only changed the battery once in 15 years.

Oh well. Swapped out the battery following the EdgunWest video instructions/recommendations. Removed the cover. Removed the EDMU. Installed the new CR2032 Energizer. EDMU powered up fine. Went to push the circuit board back into the gauge housing and a solder joint on one of the 4 wires failed. :-( I gently pulled the circuit board back out to see if it was something that might be repairable, and another wire came loose. DOH! :-( I don't have a soldering iron with a fine enough tip to get into the space to even try to attempt a repair. Looks like it's time to find a good analog gauge.

Changing a battery 3-4 times shouldn't cause a soldering failure like that. I've only changed the battery once..twice if you count the wire failure..not sure on the previous owner.

Edgun offers Edgun Branded Analog gauges..anyone have any experience with their quality? Or would it just be better to go with a WIKA?
