EBR Target Challenge

OK, no laughing gang.... an average shooter here, just wanting to join the EBR target challenge. Shooting NUAH targets and cherry picking is not the same as this!

I just recently started shooting EBR target cards ( Mike, this one is the official size I think and not the one you attached in the link ). I have about 100 of these already printed and paid for from Office Depot on 110 lb card stock. But, I can switch and use your 'CC' EBR 95 yard version too so it's fair for everyone. Just let me know either way. In any case, the larger official EBR size did not help me as you will see below! lol..

Have been shooting 100 yard BR for about 10 months now, and up until recently, was shooting practice NUAH targets and Splatterburst, et. al. I do realize that improvement will come with starting to shoot these, but this was the best I could do this day anyway. Wind is pretty much always 5-10 mph, outdoor range and big open fields. These EBR cards are a challenge and hats off to the guys who shoot them for competition. Anyway, had fun and I will get better!

Sorry, forgot the background for the above target. RW Safari .25 caliber shooting JSB 34g MK2's at around 865 FPS on Medium Power. It shoots the same pellet on High at around 947 FPS average, which is a bit hot I think. I'm still experimenting with ammo and NSA slugs.

This target was shot in typical EBR conditions at 75 yards (the longest distance at my house; it’s also the qualifying distance for EBR). Head winds were 20-30 mph whipping back and forth at 40 degrees each way (80 degrees total); temperature was 90f. The winds at Rio Salado Range (EBR) are like a redhead, you never know when it’s going to go crazy (based on personal experience). One hour it’s beautiful, the next hour its nuts. The POA can be at the next target over. Anyone that has been to EBA will tell you to practice in as windy condition as you can! It would be interesting to see targets posted in high wind conditions to simulate EBR. Thanks Mike for setting this up, it's lots of fun, Stan

Jimmy, I saw your two NUAH targets. Awesome shooting, so think about giving this EBR target event a go too. Pretty sure that .30 Boss is going to hold her own here too!

Thanks Tom, I'm still studying those EBR targets.Looks like EBR 8 ring is 2 inches, same size as our 9 ring. EBR 9 ring is 1.25" and you're allowed to touch the line where as our score goes to the lower score if it touches the 9 line from inside the 10 ring. Gonna be a little confusing on the scoring till I get the hang of it.

This is my best so far. I’ve shot 5 targets in total with my first goal to keep all 25 shots inside the 8 ring. I had 1 outside . It’s 100y
Im really enjoying this. I usually just shoot away at my steel plate. With a single point of aim. 
It has slowed down my shooting. Learning to be more patient and understanding a little better why slugs end up where they do! 
As I understand it the shot must break the line to score? I used one of my .22 slugs as a plug to check the close ones. 
Mike has set a very high bar with 237..... 

More practice required

You will have to forgive me on this one. I was checking out this card on my return from the target stand and caught the front of my sandal on the broken down wire fence I have to step over and did a face plant into the earth. Bruised the heel of my hand and scraped up my elbow pretty good. That would have been fun to catch on camera. Lol 


This is actually a different HP gun I built a few years ago that came back for maintenance. 


Wind was not bad...3-5mph. Kind of rare here.

Took 2 tries this morning with Thomas HP 22 shooting JSB slugs at 925. The other card was a 236 7x. I need to focus a little more and I think 240s will come. This actually mimics the precision of 25m somewhat...unlike pellets. I shot no more than 2 sighters per card. I waited for conditions and adjusted holds only on flag position when I couldn’t get the condition I wanted. Still...both cards were shot under 15 minutes each. I think this could possibly be competitive with Rimfire at 50y. I will try it when I get a chance.

Between the 2 cards I shot there were six 5 shot groups under .550” Center to Center.

I wonder why those two shots hit so low in the right middle bull??? It'd be interesting if you used a chrono next time you shoot this to see if the fps is lower when shots hit lower.

........

I just don't understand why it's so prominent that slugs have such big flyers that ruin groups??? I experienced the same thing when I shot slugs out of a RW.

Steve, I've got some chrono data from slugs and pellets for an upcoming write-up that is directly related to your question here. Very interesting and Ive been pondering on it for about 36hrs now. It only gets more intriguing the more I think about it. (Sneak preview, you're onto something, and I was able to capture it with a chrono and document enough about about it to see some trends)

Steve, those were not flyers. They did what the should have. I just missed the wind. It was moving between 9:00 and 11:30. I shot both of those as if they were 9:00...but I did not see that the flags had flipped to 11:00. I have shot very little outdoor BR since 2016. I’m no where near being on top of things right now. This is precisely why I’m certain I could get into the 240s pretty quickly. If this target was plugged, it would already be in the 240s.


This setup has a pretty big slant. 10:30 L to R wind pushes the pellet down at almost 45 degrees. 9:00 pushes down around 20 degrees. 11:30 goes nearly vertical. The velocity spreads for 40 shots were around 10. Not flyers at all.

Interesting that a wind change would make those two shots drop an extra inch with slugs?!

Are you using a bipod or a benchrest, what brands of, or other pertinent info on your set up would be fun to know?

Take a look at this chart. This is a Rimfire wind rose, but it is pretty close to what I’m seeing with slugs.


I’m shooting free recoil from a front rest and rear bag. I touch nothing but the trigger and trigger guard.

how far are the targets suppose to be I only got 61 yards to play with 

I’ve been wanting to do this for a long time and I finally found a couple free hours this afternoon. This is the FIRST time that I have ever bench rest my rifle at 100 yards and I was intimidated to say the least. A few weeks ago I sighted my Impacts in at 75 and was pretty impressed by their accuracy so I was anxious to stretch it out to 100 yards.

A little background first, I am a competitive pistol shooter in IDPA, USPSA, 3 gun and bowling pins. However my weakness in 3 gun is rifle because I have very little experience shooting one. About 2-1/2 years ago I started hunting pigeons with a Streamline, then progressed to a Dream Pup, both in .22. I bought a .25 Impact with hopes of eventually trying the PAC since I am in Ohio. Then I fell into a deal on a .30 and then recently bought a .22 barrel kit. 


After shooting 100 yards today I have a new found respect for each and every shooter who have posted above because it didn’t take me long to realize that this is VERY difficult, at least it is for me. I know everyone starts somewhere and today is my somewhere. I shot three sheets today and the wind was giving me fits. I had 16” long survey tape in poles at 25 and 50 yards and they were horizontal most of the time so I am not sure what that equates to in MPH? When the tape laid down I tried to fire off a few rounds then waited for another break. I am not sure if this is the right method but it was what I was doing.


So, please don’t laugh, remember this is my “somewhere” starting point. My first target scored 182, second was 212 and final was 220. Shooting off a bipod and rear bag, JSB .22 RDM’s unsorted, direct from the tin. 18x Discovery scope.

I’ve never scored a target so I hope I have done it correctly?
