EBR Target Challenge

There has been a lot or discussion on this thread about misses and flyers I just posted this related topic on the General Forum maybe you will find it helpful, https://www.airgunnation.com/topic/unexplained-flyers-misses-and-frustrated-shooters-what-happens/

Donne - I read it cover to cover. When you read this long list of variables, it really does explain the many causes for fliers. Meaning - there are so many other reasons (Besides ammo) as to why you can experience an ‘errant’ shot. Good reality check!

I finally had some EBR Target Challenge fun this past weekend in the down time of our field target/airgun-filled camping weekend.

There is nothing extraordinary here, but possibly interesting to anyone chasing groups at 100 yards with airguns, especially considering the guns, projectiles, and barrels these were shot with.

All these were from 100 yards and witnessed.

USFT/20FPE .177

First are two of three cards I shot using my USFT and sitting on a bumbag from my field target position. This gun does 905-925fps with JSB 10.34, so around 19.5fpe. Barrel is a 24inch .177 poly with a slight choke. The winds varied in intensity and direction but keeping an eye on the flags it was pretty predictable, average hold-off was probably 4 or 5 inches, with extremes of that being from dead-on to 8 inches of required hold off. Not many sighters were taken, less than 10 total, and all but 1 or 2 sighters were taken first. I ripped the scored shots off pretty quickly.

The third card I shot with this gun looked like about a 206 when scored from the scope, but there were a couple Xs on that one, just had too many 6s that the wind got a hold of on that 3rd card to score very well. Pretty fun little experiment with the 20fpe. Hard to see those tiny .177 holes.

JSAR Raptor .22

The next ones were shot from the Raptor with a Career 707 barrel. I think the Career barrel has a 1:22 twist and no choke. It is about 18 inches long. I'm not sure of the energy but it was around 48fpe with a slightly longer (different) barrel and I'm sure losing the 3 or so inches going to this barrel would have decreased the power to maybe the 42-44? fpe area. Shots taken from the Raptor were from a plastic table and bipod, essentially benchrested.

And yes, this first one is with slugs (hey, I was curious). I used zero hold over and zero input from any wind flags or timing of shots for opportune wind characteristics. I just wanted to see what the wind would do to slugs, compared to pellets.

I was quite pleased, considering I just held as close to dead center as possible for all shots. Wind sure gets those slugs less than diabolos, even the good ones like the 25.4gr JSB MRDs.

This was the cherry picked, best 100 yard, 5 shot group from the Raptor with slugs.

And, finally, here are ten consecutive shots also taken from the Raptor with Career barrel, all the same settings as above but using JSB 25.4gr Monster RDs.

No hold off for the above 10 shots with MRDs, and the left to right push is evident.

VERY fun experiment.

Good shooting Tommy. That left Card could easily be a 230 if not for the 36!

Thanks Mike.

I think I lost concentration because I vividly remember as I came to that 4th target In the rotation my mind was saying, “ don’t screw this up.” Invariably, if you start thinking like that you start loosing focus and it manifests into errant shots. Mind over matter needs to prevail.

These targets are great, I’m going to be using them a lot.

I shot 6 cards yesterday. Conditions were close to perfect. So I’m wondering how the heck I’m gonna shoot scores like this when they’re not.

I had one card where I could’ve broken into the 230s. The one on the bottom with red circles around the bad shots. Instead I had two 6s and shot a 224.
When I finally hit a 230 I will score it correctly.

Good shooting Mike. Those 230s are hard to get in less than ideal conditions. Good cards especially on your first go round! When you print the cards don’t select fit to paper. When done to the correct size the Team Centercut is partially cut off. The 8 ring should be exactly 2 inches. Your cards are slightly smaller than “regulation”.

Here you go Mike. My first and only official EBR targets I’ve ever shot at 100yds. I shot the first and second targets with my Impact using the .25 JSB King Heavies at 910-920fps and a Vortex Golden Eagle scope. The third target was shot using the RAW HM1000X and the .25 JSB King Heavies at 905-915fps and an Athlon Ares BTR scope. The wind was from right to left and light 3-4mph.

Not exactly proud of these targets but I had to start somewhere, a little embarrassed actually. It was funny, I actually got a little nervous too. Target #1 was actually going well until I messed up the last shot on the second group and then again on the 3rd group. I scored #1 222(4X), #2 209(2X) and #3 215(1X) I’m not sure if they are 100% accurate as I’ve never scored these before. I would have shot a couple more but Cooper was done and ready to leave the range when I grabbed his RAW. It’s going to be hard to decide which gun to use for this challenge moving forward, the trigger on the RAW is so much better than the Impact and I think it’s consistently more accurate too. I’ve got Daystate on the brain too. I almost had enough saved up when I bought Alex a new set up. If they’re as great as advertised, I can’t wait! Anyway...Now I have a baseline and know that I can do a lot better than these. I’ll try and shoot a couple more of these targets on the weekend and my days off. Have a good one! Stoti
