I highlighted in BOLD the changes I think are exciting! Looks like .177 got displaced as the minimum pellet size & power requirements is .22 caliber & 28 ft/lbs.

AMERICAN FIELD TARGET RULES
Match Format:5 Lanes | 20 Targets | 40 Shots4 Targets Per Lane
Limited to the first 75 registered shooters

Classes:Extreme Class:
  • .25 – .35 caliber (minimum 28 ft/lbs at muzzle required to knock down targets)
  • Maximum 150 ft/lbs
High Power Class:
  • .22 caliber (minimum 28 ft/lbs at muzzle required to knock down targets)
  • Maximum 50 ft/lbs
Prizes:Extreme Class:
  • 1st Place = $600.00 Cash
  • 2nd Place = $300.00 Cash
  • 3rd Place = $100.00 Cash
High Power Class:
  • 1st Place = $600.00 Cash
  • 2nd Place = $300.00 Cash
  • 3rd Place = $100.00 Cash
Rules:
  • No Tripods
  • No Rear Rest
  • Pellets Only
  • Scope Magnification maximum of 32x
  • No Challenging of targets
  • Any shooting position is allowed within marked shooting area
  • Bipods, shooting sticks, and monopods are allowed (2 inch maximum diameter base)
  • No chairs with back allowed
Format:
  • Targets will be placed from 15–100 yards
  • All target distances will be marked
  • Each shooter will have 5 minutes to shoot all 4 targets twice for a total of 8 shots per station.
  • 3 Shooters per group
  • Groups will be scheduled throughout the day from 8:00AM – 4:00PM
  • Groups will be scheduled every 20 minutes
  • Sight in range will be open from 7:00 AM to 4:00PM
  • 1 mulligan shot per shooter can be used if needed
  • Kill zones will be various shape and sizes
  • Air will be provided on the course with Female foster fitting (you must supply own fitting with male connect)
Sounds like they are tailoring this event towards real life American Hunting scenarios.
 
Very excited for this, I hope it goes well for them. 

This is a trial run, I'm sure they will fine tune it for next year!

I doubt they can squeeze in .177's though, the energy needed at 100yards would have to be above 5-6fpe as a bare minimum, I doubt they would want to cut it so close to the minimum to prevent issues with targets not falling when hit. Who knows, if the event is popular, they could always add a .177 class- or modify the rules to fit them in (60-70yard max for the high power class, and allow .177?)

Gonna be a seriously fun event, wish I could be there to see reactions and hear peoples thoughts on it :)

From what I've noticed, most "top FT shooters" would likely turn their nose to such an event anyway. Heck, look at the squabbles between 12fpe and 20fpe shooters that often occur lol. 

The great part, that the insane dedication to FT causes many to overlook, is it stands good chance to introduce MANY new people to the sport. You don't start off with a tenkara rod at 5 yrs old, its a snoopy pole and bobber. You get hooked, and that grows to more pure forms of the sport. Big power pcp's are all the rage, no secret there. Everyone whos into pcp's seems to have a 30,40 even 50fpe cannon, and this will allow them ALL to compete and have fun with it! Add to that, the chance for a guy to show up with a .22 Mrod, some fine tuned real life hunting skills, and clean everyones clocks using 100+fpe daystates would be a blast. 

Another thing I'd like to see happen, is for some clubs to start rimfire FT matches. Airguns and rimfires could compete on the same courses! That could introduce TONS of new people to FT. 




Pretty positive the event sells out anyway, so not everyone could join the shoot even if it was a different date. I can say one thing, out of the 2 coinciding shoots, the American FT event will have the coolest targets :)
