eBay now charging sales tax

While you are technically correct the customer is still paying tax. In NY state when you buy from a out of state vendor the vendor only has to collect tax if they do more than $100,000 a year in NY business. eBay has vendors that don’t do anywhere near that 100,000 minimum but because ebay does you have to pay the tax when you make purchase threw eBay if you can deal direct with vendor you don’t have to pay the tax threw them. With all that said if you call a vendor and tell them what your willing to pay for an item quite often you can get a discount that will offset the tax. But if the item is in big demand the odds are are the vendor will not be inclined to accommodate your request.

Yes, I understand that. I was just pointing out that eBay does not charge a tax and keep the proceeds. In this country, we have a GST, goods and services tax of 10% of nearly everything except food. Up until recently, they didn't collect it on anything bought online under AUS $1000 because it would cost more to collect than the expected revenue. All the bricks and mortar stores bitched and moaned about unfair advantages on top of their overheads. So the government said righto we will make everybody pay it no matter how small the transaction. Now everybody from eBay, AliExpress and Amazon automatically add it to the bill. Stuff that comes from OS has it tacked on at the checkout and local stuff includes it in their advised price.
