Easy way to reduce photo size before posting?

Photography is my other hobby. I can put a pic in Lightroom and resize it and whatever. But sometimes I just want to take a quick pic with my phone camera (android) to include in a post. I am a neanderthal with the phone, btw.

I figured out I can email the pic to myself then on my pc I download it to the desktop, then I can attach it via the "fast upload an image" icon in the reply options at top. This works but the image is huge in the post. Is there an easy way to downsize it before , or during the posting process?

Here is an example. I'm near the bottom of this thread.

Humm, I just tried something and I think it will work. I'll see when I submit this post. I right clicked on the image on the desktop and there was an edit option. In that there was an option to resize. I resized it to 20%. So now I'm going to attach the resized image. Only downside I see is that it seems to overwrite the original image so you'd lose the full size image, but these are something I wouldn't need the original for anyway, so no big deal. Here goes...

HA! It worked. But if there is something easier with less steps, I'm all ears!

Like that. Hit Quote. Resized the image you uploaded ... and saved it back to AGN. Never downloaded it.

Or upload an image and downsize it. When someone opens it in a new tab it reverts to the size it was when it was uploaded. So you can make them display small and enlarge upon closer inspection. Right click on the image of your group and display it in a new tab.

I don't think you can actually get it to display larger than it was when you uploaded it though and you can't change the aspect ratio either.

I've always used the ages old Irfanview to resize/crop etc.

Open your saved image in Irfanview,

Press Ctrl+R to resize, press enter and Ctrl+S to save with a new name. That's it. You can also set the JPG compression to suit your image output.

It's an amazing little piece of software that loads very fast and also allows basic editing.

I use the resize / adjust size feature in paint in windows, so my phone pictures i resize to 30 % of the original, which fit fine on my 1080å screen displaying a forum where i would post.

Be advised that now it seem there also is a 3D paint in windows, you will want the good old one. ( pardon my Danish language windows )

For hosting i use tumbler and post private so the pic cant be seen there, for the sites that dont allow a direct upload but prefer a link to a off site location.

If into photography ( as am I ) and your using LR ( as am I - the adobe $10 a month LR & PS combo package ) then just grab imagemagick and install it. You'll find that you can use it in conjunction with many LR presets and add-ons. It's also very handy to use straight from a shell too ( cmd prompt ). One of the utilities that comes with it is called 'mogrify' and a simple example of how I often use that is like so.

start | run | cmd
( . . . now in a "dos prompt" (cmd shell ) )
cd \wherever your picture is - we'll assume .jpg and that it's in the c:\tmp directory

c:\tmp>mogrify -resize 50% *.jpg

Done. Whatever .jpg's were in that c:\tmp directory are now 1/2 the size they previously were. You can specify any percentage you want.

This assumes the imagemagick tools are in the path. ( I do I.T. as my day job . . . apologies for nerd speak if some of it is not understood ) ;-)

↑ Yeah -- it sounds nerdy and complicated but it's actually quite simple and once familiar with opening a shell, cd'ing to where the photos are - resizing them is a quick breeze.

Irfanview is a good one. I like Faststone Image viewer myself - it's just that - fast and ctrl+r is how to resize images with that one.

Thanks everyone. The goal was/is not to have to open several programs to accomplish this. As I went back and looked again and did this photo I see that when I right click on the image and hit edit, Paint is what comes up and I'm using the resize feature plingpling has shown. I'm attaching another pic to this and I put 10 in the percentage boxes you see in his post. Btw I just shot this to post in another thread about the ten dimes target with a K97. This is 5 shots on each dot

Jdanvers, yes I have the monthly package and I use Faststone as my culling program as it's much faster than LR, to me anyway.

Those are impressive groups! If those were shot at 25 yards with a springer that is probably the best 25 yard target I've seen in the 10 dimes challenge.
