Events Western New Mexico Airgun Match on 07/10/20 and 07/11/20

The Southwest Airgunners will have a match at the Aspen Mountain site on the second weekend in July. We just had the first event at this site last weekend and it was a ton of fun for all involved. Check out the match report here:

https://www.airgunnation.com/topic/southwest-airguns-aspen-mountain-airgun-rendezvous-06-06-20-match-report/

Planned events for July include a 20fpe silhouette match on Friday afternoon/evening, starting at 3pm, and a 13 lane/52shot field target course on Saturday morning, starting at 10am. Both will be held at Arizona time (AZ is one hour behind NM time right now).

Rules for the silhouette event are simple: 20fpe limit, ram/turkey/pig/chicken/chicken at each of 40/50/60/70/yards, total of 20 shots per round, shot from any field target position, timed.

Rules for the FT match will be similar to what is practiced across the country, essentially AAFTA rules (20fpe limit, Open, Hunter, WFTF classes). We also have a Freestyle class which is pretty much anything goes, with the exception of a power limit of 20foot pounds. Last weekend we had a challenging but fun course.

No match fee required but a donation of $5-10 would be greatly appreciated, going towards target maintenance and the continued establishment of the club.

First timers are not only welcome but highly encouraged. We'd love to show you how fun field target can be. A laid-back atmosphere and a willingness to help will be the name of the game for the weekend. Don't be intimidated by not ever having shot a match before.

The match site is described in last weekend's report, but what seemed to work for most was to get directions from GPS or Google to Luna, New Mexico, in Catron County. There is also a Luna County in New Mexico, down on the border with Mexico, that's the wrong place. For the correct place, on HWY 180, about 9 miles south of the tiny town of Luna, NM turn west onto Forest Road 209. The turn off is at mile marker 14. Follow FS209/Saddle Mountain Lookout Road about 2.6 miles. FS209 is gravel, somewhat narrow, and gains elevation but we had some camp trailers and even a low clearance car make it in without any difficulty last weekend.

Many of us will be camping with tents/trailers and anybody is welcome to join the camping. There is no established camp site, just dispersed camping wherever you'd like. If you're not the camping type, nearest lodging would be in Alpine, AZ or Ranch Grande Estates, NM.

It's a little under 4hrs from Albuquerque and about 4.5hrs from Phoenix. The scenery is worth the drive. It is around 8600feet above sea level so springers welcome, but plan on some lost fps (and cool weather when the sun goes down).

The more the merrier, all are invited and welcome.

Please PM me if you're planning on coming or would like to have any questions answered.

(It is not confirmed yet, but we may have a couple lanes set up as a fun side-shoot for Saturday afternoon/evening with some high power/long range airguns. Some of the big EBR American Field Targets and some other bell targets/steel may make their way to the camp site. IF this comes to fruition, it'll likely just be a few lanes but it might be worth bringing an airgun that'll do 30+ fpe and reach out there to 100yards. This is likely to be fairly informal but still prove to be quite fun.)

OK, Southwest Airgunners, now you have gone and done it. I have kids and grandkids in Albuquerque and get out there yearly. Looks like I will be packing my FT gear the next trip West.

Congrats on your new club. It looks like an awesome location and will be quite interesting for flat-landers like me. Excellent match reporting and great enthusiasm. I have read them both. Keep up the good work.

ps Don't forget to get on the calendars and other websites so everyone can find your shooting dates.

Wow that is beautiful country up in there. I spent much time working out of Reserve flying all over that country in a Cessna 182, 4x4s and dirt bikes around 1980. Working for a Geologist searching for and staking mineral claims, and his own little pet project, looking for a P40 that crashed near Reserve in 1943 and has to this day never been recovered. So somewhere not far from you is an old airframe that landed relatively intact, since the pilot walked out, that should have 4 Browning .50 Calibers in the wings.

I love the Gila NF. I grew up around Truth or Consequences and frequently camped, hunted and fished all over it. I usually meet with some old friends every Spring to camp along the East Fork of the Gila, but unfortunately those plans got changed this year.

I'm currently over in Lea County. It's about a 7 hour trip from here. But it used to take near that long to get back up into the wilderness area before the Forest Service graded and graveled the main roads.

It's such short notice I can't promise anything but it's a possibility. although I'm not really equipped to compete, I would love to make it to see the range and hang out. But if not I'll certainly keep an eye out for future events.

Fun stories (DB Cooper esque stuff).

Great to hear that we may see you at a match at some point.
