Early 19th century art that shoots by today’s standards!

I was urged to pull these out of the safe earlier in the week, by a post done by Mr. septic. The best part is, I decided I should shoot them while I dusted them off. I think you’re going to be as amazed as I was.

The rifles were both made by BSA, the Birmingham small arms Company Limited, in England. I bought these after I learned that a gentleman named Harry (yrrah) from Oz, Who became a good Internet friend, owned and enjoyed one of these for many years.

The smaller rifle is a BSA standard. The dates on the patent are from 1905 to 1908, to various countries. It is a 177 caliber. The larger rifle is a BSA improved model D, I guess this was the cats meow at the time. It is a 22 caliber. They both have absolutely wonderful triggers. And everything about them just plain feels good to the hand and Eye 👁.

I just shot these three shot groups at 20 yards off hand, crazy. The 22 hits the wood with authority. It would roll an English bunny dead as a door nail (I think of the 17 is more of a sparrow killer). The 2 three shot groups (The target pictures came through sideways) were with the 22. I’d have to say the target on the top is lucky. It would be hard to repeat that with a scoped FT rifle at 40X. Pretty amazing.

I am not even close to an expert on these, just an admirer. I picture of the Laird of an Estate with the 22, keeping the garden clean of varmints. Possibly the 177 was owned by a young boy, if he was very lucky and his father was quite wealthy. I’m sure they both have many stories they could tell.
