Dumbfounded, tired of looking, need scope suggestions.

I’m a SFP guy. I need a scope that starts at 4X or less and goes to at least 20X. I need excellent glass for night shooting and accurate, not mushy turrets for day shooting. And of course good tracking. I like the Element SFP scopes reticle but it starts a 6X. I like the Nightforce NX8 but it’s above my airgun scope budget. So I’m tired of looking and wanting to gamble my $1k budget on a scope from a manufacturer that I haven’t had one of their scopes before. I can use my FFP Athlon at night and the glass is good but the 6X minimum is a little too much for most shots and the FFP reticle is just a little too small on 6X. So this is where you guys come in.

This is sfp, not quite 4-20,parallax is 25 yds, I’ve had good luck with vortex. I’ve found them from 849.99-899.00

Some US Optics scopes at Tombstone Tactical are a pretty good deal right now. Put in cart to get best price. I picked up a TS-25 5x25x50 JVCR ffp from them and the the price is good for what I got. Japanese glass Chinese parts and assembly with a final US inspection. Turrets have the tiniest hint of mush but clicks are solid glass is bright and it has a decent reticle. Took a couple of weeks to get the scope and they required a copy my ID, Drivers license, to sell it to me.

Edit;

Sorry just checked not much sfp there at all.

Aztec makes a pretty decent scope in 3-18x50 and 5.5x25x50 in the sfp flavor though I love mine. Fairly bright and clear glass most of the way up the magnification scale, good turrets, and a solid build with a wonderful reticle. They have a slight bit of Chromatic aberration in certain lighting conditions though.

A 5X to whatever could work but starting out at 6X is just too much when coupled with my night vision. I could buy the other model night vision that has zero magnification but I definitely would never see a FFP reticle at 6X at night. My one gun has a 4-16 Hawk 30 compact on it and that thing is awesome at night and clear as a bell. But I need more daytime magnification for the other gun I shoot at night.

Hello Take a look at the Meopta Optika6 I know a few of the main airgun venders carry them as well as scopelist.com. I have 2 Optika6 scopes a 1-6 and a 3-18 I just got the other day they are very bright and I love the illuminated center dot on the BDC reticle. Just so you know, the only negative was the Dichro reticle it did not work as claims, but since I have not used that reticle I have no personal experience with it.. Hope this helps Eric

Thanks guys for all the suggestions. It was always one thing when it came to a scope. The Helos, FFP, I’m just done with FFP. Sold all mine except one. I found that if I am going to hold over on something, I’m on max magnification anyway. I may return to FFP one day when my eyeballs require me to get scopes at 32X+. I don’t like having a portion of my adjustment range that is unusable. Other scopes it was I liked the reticle but the minimum parallax was too high or it had a good minimum parallax but I didn’t like the reticle. So I took Spray1Marks tip and just ordered the Nightforce. It checked all the boxes and setting a budget never works anyway.

My best advice is to wait, if you have to, and spend more money if you have to. Learn from my mistakes (and probably many others)... I made two uninformed scope purchases and on another occasion, I settled for less than I wanted, due to my budget. None of these scopes ever completely worked out. In fact 2 of those scopes continue to serve as paperweights on my desk that act as a reminder to never settle for less.

I had a checklist of features that I sought but no scope for under $1000 met my needs. So I increased my budget and and bought the scopes that fit my needs perfectly. Not a day goes by that I don't appreciate my decision and my scopes. I use my scopes on an almost daily basis and I couldn't be happier with my decision.

I hope this helps

Joe

The regular Midas line of Athlon is SFP. The 4.5-27x50 might be suitable for you.

Midas BTR GEN2 | Hunting Rifle Scopes | Athlon Optics

Ditto Steve's recommendation. I have an Athlon Midas BTR gen2 on my .25 Delta Wolf. I'm a "clicker" so I prefer SFP scopes, and it fits the bill. To me it is an Athlon Ares BTR FFP that is an SFP. Pretty much the same other than the focal plane. Great reticle, glass, turrets, IR... Fairly lightweight, overall very good scope for the money...

I'm late to the discussion....

What scope did you get, Frank? (I'm not finding Spray1Marks' recommendation ....)

About the reasoning in favor of SFP — I'm somewhat wavering in my previous FFP-or-bust commitment. ;-)

(1) At close ranges I use a low mag and my quarry is within PBR — so no need for a POA adjustment.

(2) At far ranges I use a high mag and because of range I do need a POA adjustment. So, at high magnification I want my reticle to be true (in the case of a 4-24x scope, the reticle should be calibrated at 24x).

BUT counterintuitively most SFP reticles are NOT calibrated at maximum magnification — instead they are calibrated at 10x (or 15x as the mentioned Athlon* Midas BTR Gen. 2 4.5-27x50 SFP).

So, yeah, this makes little sense to me. I would have to carefully look and check that my magnification is right at the calibrated setting.... Not helpful when trying to line up a shot on a moving critter.... I only found one scope that at least lets you feel (with a click) when you're reaching the calibrated magnification.

I am really trying to like SFP scopes.....

Matthias

*Well, this particular Athlon has a 30y minimum parallax — that's a deadly deal breaker for me.
