I'm so totally confused about mounting this scope on this rife...I've absolutely baffled myself reading about adjustable rings, the benefits of a unitized mount, using adjustable mounts to assist with optically centering...gaaaaah! My past experience was a utilitarian set of UTG rings on one of Dennis Bakers scope mounts for my Steroid 392...they worked just fine for what that air rifle is all about...

Having invested in both a very nice airgun and scope, I feel that joining the two should be given some additional thought and if need be an additional investment in how they mate. I initially picked up a set of BKL Double Strap 30mm Rings but because of the information overload, I'm second guessing myself. I'd appreciate some input in general as well as any specific recommendations if BKL's are not the best choice.

I had issues with both the one piece and two piece BKLs when mounted on my .177 HW95. The one piece mounts would slide on the HW95 receiver dovetails even when the horizontal base screws were torqued to 40 in/lbs which is 5 in/lbs above the BKL recommended torque. Also, the scope would shift in the mount rings with 15 in/lbs of top screw torque unless the rings were lined with cloth electrical friction tape........

With the two piece BKLs the scope would slip using 10 in/lbs of top strap screw torque, however the scope tubes were damaged when I used 15 in/lbs of top screw torque on the rather narrow top straps. Notice the distinctive "double dents" ........

My scope mount issues were solved by using a UTG Universal dovetail to Picatinny adapter with Weaver Quad lock scope rings...........

As you can see, the combination of UTG adapter and Weaver high Quad Lock rings sets a scope with a 50mm objective at the perfect height above the receiver tube. The downside is that while there are other Picatinny rings for scopes with 30mm tubes, the nice light weight Weaver Quad locks are only available for 1" scope tubes. The Quad Locks are offered in medium, high & extra high profiles and my scopes with 50mm objectives are to large to use the medium profile mounts.

Anywhoo.......the relatively low cost UTG Universal adapters are one piece functioning similar to the expensive BKLs, however the UTG offerings also includes a scope stop pin which isn't available with the BKLs.

I bought my Quad Lock rings at "WallyMart" for under $10

Ed, Thanks much for the feedback. Do you think that the slip issues you mentioned would still exist in a PCP? I'm not familiar with the HW95 enough to know what kind of recoil it has as a gas piston rifle. My personal preference would be to use the dovetails on the S510XS as opposed to adapting up to a picatinny but nothing is set in stone. However that brings up another question relative to mounts, and one I've never had experience with, does one adjust the cheekpiece to the best eye box on the scope? or to the feel of the rifle when I bring it up to my shoulder? It would seem to me that one might have to try several mount heights to find the best one.

PS Unfortunately the links you provided on imgur gave me a "Zoink"

"Do you think that the slip issues you mentioned would still exist in a PCP?"

Nope, plus the scope doesn't even have to be "springer rated". A couple advantages of the PCP is the fact that a cheap scope will hold up well on an "almost absent recoil gun" which also makes the PCPs easier to shoot accurately. The ease of shooting a PCP accurately and lack of "scope wrecking recoil" does offset the hassles of PCP "care and feeding" such as buying or pumping air, counting shots, dirt in that frammis causing leaks, transporting a "high pressure "bomb" (especially in a hot car), counting shots, so on and so forth.

Back to scope mounts........

My .177 R9 and HW95 springers have a moderate "home tune" (about 13fpe), are twang and vibration free, yet the BKL mounts haven't held on the shallow scope mounting dovetails since the BKLs don't include a stop pin. Perhaps the rather thin wall of the HW95 doesn't allow deeper dovetail grooves so the BKLs don't have a "proper bite". The one piece UTG universal adapter with stop pin did stop all scope shifting, plus using Weaver/Picatinny rings with the mount makes it real easy to "remove and replace" scopes without the need of loosening top strap screws, only the large base clamp screw, on each ring...........

Ed,

Thanks, the usual “a picture is worth...” the rail is a lot lower than I had envisioned. Yes I’ve seen dovetail cuts that were too shallow or 11mm mounts whose “teeth” were so blunt as to be ineffective gripping the cuts. The SWFA scope came as a kit and one the accessories was a Bobro dual ring rail mount, I didnt think I was going to use it but I may to to give it a look (still in its box). I don’t recall if it was a Picatinny or Dovetail version. I will agree that being able to leave pic mounts on the scope and simply unscrew them from the rail has its merits; exactly why I have a small collection of UTG 30mm and 1” versions of their LE QD lever mounts. At one point in this process I had three scopes I was trying to evaluate in a small window of return time. Being able to quickly replace one scope with the next to compare features was a blessing. I figure I’ll find a use for them at some point.

PS My wife just looked over my shoulder and asked “what does he mean a bomb in the car?”...

PPS Okay I put that fire out...unrelated question how do you like your Hawke turrets? the ones on the Hawke Sidewinder 6-24x56 FFP I tested were so mushy feeling and the clicks so indistinct as to be almost nonexistent to the touch. It was the first to be returned not just for that reason but that was the main drawback.

“what does he mean a bomb in the car?”

Obviously uninformed of what 3000+psi air can do if a fitting lets loose inside a car!

"how do you like your Hawke turrets?"

I own these Hawke scopes models with 1" tubes and "front AO focusing"..........

LOL....the Panorama at the top still has the Weaver rings mounted because it was taken from my Beeman R9 springer. I just "twisted the turrets" of all three scopes and the clicks were distinctive and audible. Surprisingly the cheaper Vantage scope had the most "distinctive and audible" clicks. All three of these scopes are of Chinese origin as I'm supposing other Hawke models so perhaps "Chinese QC" comes into play here.

A couple a side notes that probably only applies to my way of scope setup but it works well for me and my recoiling HW springers.......

I first check the "optical centering" of a "new outta tha box" scope by using the easy "mirror method". New scopes are supposed to be optically centered when shipped so if the reticle alignment agrees with it's reflection in the mirror within a click or two I use the mirror method for reticle aligning thereafter. I do this to maintain good scope erector spring tension so the reticle doesn't "wander around" with the recoil of my piston guns. IMHO (or so I've read) that centering the scope reticle also allows light come through the center of all lenses in the erector instead of going through "slightly skewed lenses".

To be able to return to the "mirror optical setting" without returning to the mirror I reset the scale on the turrets so they read zero........

After mounting the optically centered scope I then bend my HW springer barrels till the poi at 30 yards (my usual zero distance) is less than 1" from the aim point. Then I do the "fine adjusting" using the turrets and since I only use "holdover aiming" the turrets are only used for the occasional "fine adjusting". Using this method my turret marks never move more than a "quarter turn" off the "zero mark" when "fine adjusted" (usually no more than 5 clicks with my Hawke scopes). It's easy to know which way to turn a turret to "optical zero" if needed.

This MAY be of help...........

How I bend my barrels...........

For break barrel "snoop or windage" I've used a "tweaking tree" off the side of my practice lane.........

This "method" doesn't work for adding "snoop" to a barrel so I mage up a "barrel tweaker" that can be used for any direction of bend and the bending can be done upstairs...........

Here is a target I used for bending a new barrel mounted to my HW95 upstairs at 18 yards (fine adjustments were later done at 30 yards on the practice lane using the turrets)...........

LOL....all the above "barrel tweaking" can be eliminated by using adjustable mounts.

Decades ago I tried a couple versions of adjustable mounts and found it so frustrating to have them "shoot loose" with use after spending a couple hours mounting the scope, shooting a group, removing the scope from the rings to adjust the mount, replace the scope in the rings to shoot another group, so on and so forth till the scope "pointed straight. After a few of those sessions I simply started bending my barrels and have been doing so ever since!

I'm liking those...oh and Ed

RE: “what does he mean a bomb in the car?” ----> Obviously uninformed of what 3000+psi air can do if a fitting lets loose inside a car!

Well she was...and blissfully so at that...up until this morning thank you very much...Now, because she's the safety and environmental manager for a major utility in the States I have to submit a safety and risk management plan for approval...got a feeling I'm going to look like that cartoon of the cowboy on a horse once OSHA get through with him...

Just to stay on topic before I get booted by a moderator...I stumbled across these...I'm not sure I'd trust them entirely but its an interesting concept...basially as an 1" adapter is to a 30mm ring this is the dovetail to pic counterpart...
