Donny's New fat boy

What's the difference in db readings compared to the factory EVOL moderator?

Hi Dana. I don't have a dedicated decibel meter to make a comparison. I guess I could download one of the decibel meter apps on my phone but I'm not so sure about the accuracy of them. What I do know is that the Gen1 Fatboy has a higher pitch than the factory moderator and that's with me behind the gun. I haven't had anyone else shoot it with me standing on the side to do a comparison yet.

The only reason I mentioned it, and you might not be aware is that the factory moderator is actually designed as part of the shroud system. If you look in the barrel nut you will see holes, the factory moderator acts as somewhat of a stripper and uses the volume of the entire shroud. I did some experimenting with several aftermarket moderators on my EVOL, most actually caused some accuracy issues. I realize some people like the oversized sniper rifle look but beyond cosmetic they do very little for gaining any type of performance. In many cases I think it's a mental thing, it's larger so therefore it must be quieter. Personally I think so many moderators are ridiculously overpriced with very little innovation on internals other than changes to exterior cosmetics.

It very well could be a mental thing. I've been giving this some thought on the shroud, barrel nut, and moderator design as a whole system and how the DonnyFL 1/2×20 adapter blocks off the vent holes on the barrel nut disrupting it. I might have to circle back and do some accuracy and sound test again with the factory moderator. The good thing is that an aftermarket moderator is not permanent and for me, it's always worth trying. I'm still not sold on any of the aftermarket moderators as far as sound and accuracy goes. Still more testing to do and time for me has been the limiting factor.

Please correct me if I'm wrong. I assume that the sound reduction capability is a direct function of the internal volume of the moderator. So a longer, thinner moderator with the same internal volume should work as well as a short fat one, right? The real plus with the Fat Boy is the different plugs for different calibers.

From my experiments the much smaller volume but longer Koi seems to out perform shorter FX moderator or even Sumo. Logically speaking the muzzle blast goes forward and takes time to defused the energy/sound so longer would be better and it seems to corollary to my experience with 20 plus moderators of all different brand, diameter and lengths I tried. Also adding more baffles doesn’t always produce better sound suppression, the principle of sound moderation is defused the stored energy in the air before it exits so more volume the better but the location of the volume is also very important.

very interested in how the fat boy would perform and hope someone can make a video of side by side comparison with other brands and models. The video from bakers airgun is rather useless because it’s comparing to no moderator and honestly from the video the performance of the fat boy is rather disappointing.

Tell us what one is "the one" you grab for the most?

Looks like members are selling off there Fat Boys after there initial shock of the size of the sucker

DonnyFL FatBoy 2.0

Seems to me ol John's not giving the new Fat Boy a chance. If you've done ANY experimenting or reading of others work, you may understand that suppressors work different on different guns. So trying it on one gun (maybe that all he has ?) isn't giving it a chance.

I've got one coming, and hoping that it works well on one particular gun. But...I will be checking it on a few guns to check the difference. Hell, I'll even check it on a...pistol !

+1 on the longer reduces report better than shorter

Tatsu on my USFT for only 20fpe field target is MUCH louder than longer/skinnier Hugget Snipe/Standard and Logan Decimeater.

Tatsu isn't as short or as fat as the Fat Boy but still bout 3 inches shorter than the other two I mentioned and quite a bit fatter.

For me, short/fat moderators are good for keeping the OAL down, but are not the greatest option if quiet is a priority.

I bought for, and put mine on my Airmaks Caiman.

No pictures yet, but I like the look.

It replaced a three segment Huma (M30) suppressor. The big Fat Boy doesn't seem to be much, if any quieter, but the sharpness or hard "crack" is gone. It's a bit mellower overall. I was hoping for a more quiet outcome...but...I didn't get it.

Just for the fun of it, I put it on my AP16 pistol. I have a single segment Huma on it normally. And yeah, somewhat obviously the Fat Boy is notably quieter than a single segment (M30) Huma ! I may try it on other guns in the future, but unfortunately, it didn't accomplish as much as I'd hoped on the silencing front, so I won't be buying another.

P.s. - One person asked, no it did not change the target, point of impact over either the OEM baffles or the Huma.

Which moderator do I use? Well, that depends on my usecases:

- at home I shoot 7 fpe and the best commercial moderator I have found is the much older donnyfl sumo with no vent holes for .22. In pursuit of ultimate quietness in my suburban back yard I tried everything from emperor and down to hugget atom and best one was the old sumo. Second was empty FX cans with 3d printed baffles but need 2 of them put together(2 inch longer) to be slightly quieter than the sumo. My go to is a 3d printed moderator with very specific baffle configuration, it’s just as quiet as the empty FX can with baffles but 30% shorter and half the weight. Plus I can print a bunch of them.

- at the range or anywhere besides my backyard I use either the hugest belita or donnyfl FX moderator because I don’t need to be that quiet and want as short of a gun as possible.

As far as moderators I can buy a caliber specific Sumo even the newer version is the best quietness vs prince vs size/weight combo I’ve tested. For skinnier moderator the koi is pretty amazing given how small it is then Hugget sniper. DonnyFL FX is hands down best all around moderator though, not far behind sumo and koi in sound moderator but very compact and cheap!

this video actually explains the fat boy really well, design is pretty clever. Jury is still out on sound moderation performance though.
