Do I need a gun safe?

I have 4 air guns. No firearm. I don't even own a .22 lr. By law do I need a gun safe or not? I do not own any firearm so I don't really know the rules but I heard firearm needs to be lock in a safe or you can get arrested or fine. But does that apply to airgun? I store my airguns in my closet. I'm sure it is different state by state. So my state is MN.

Thanks guys. I live in an apartment 2nd story. How heavy is a gun safe? Will I be able to lift it up some stairs by myself? I was going to order one but is worry they are too heavy to lift upstairs by myself. I never own or touch a gun safe before due to I don't own any firearm so no need. I do have kids who comes over sometime and my concern is their mom (ex wife) will complain about me not being safe having my airgun in my closet with no gun safe. That is why I asked if there is a law that says you need a gun safe for airgun. Can't seem to find any information about gun safe and airguns.

so what is a safe but a locked metal box but does a safe have to be metal but just a locked box

your concern is the kids and more about the EX

make a stand up locked box and that will be more then enough, i think in your case

there are light weight safes anyway just shop around, even something that could be a chest that could be something that could something to sit on

use your imagination and your problem, if this really is one, will be solved

might work

2fast2furious Not sure what your laws are but you can ask your local law inforcement for that information . Depending on your kids ages does your closet have a regular door to it ? If so why not put a locking door knob on it to keep them out . Keep the mags out of the guns & store them & ammo out of reach or in a different area if possible . The gun safe marflow shows will hold 2 to three guns ok with scopes but 4 I would think ifey. You could move it with a large hand truck . Go to a sporting goods store where they have gun safes & try to move one & see what you think . I consider mine small & it weights around 400 pds empty ! If I sell my house its staying here & I'll just by a bigger one LOL . Best of luck Darell

Go to your local sporting goods store and see for yourself the difference sizes. If you want a stand up safe those can be heavy and expensive

No safe is going to guarantee thieves won't somehow get into them. Your responsibility is to make it harder for a thief to take it from you, or to guard against children accidentally getting their hands on a rifle/pistol/firearm.

As @marflow stated, a safe is a metal box that locks and discourages the wrong people from accessing your "stuff." I know here in CT an air rifle or air pistol, by law, is designated as a "dangerous weapon."

Harbor Freight always has a big sale (right now as a matter of fact) on their brand of gun safe. It doesn't have to be the best, it just has to make it harder and take more time....time is something most people stealing stuff don't have; they don't want to spend a lot of time in a place that they are not wanted and that the rightful inhabitants might be armed since there is a gun safe there!

My 2 cents worth.

It doesn't matter what the law is. Don't you want to keep your valuable stuff? A safe is pretty inexpensive relative to all the other stuff you spend your money on. Rifles and scopes are a substantial investment and worth protecting. I don't have super expensive safes but I do have locked safes. I figure If a professional criminal wants my stuff I really cannot stop them but a safe will discourage just about everyone else and it also provides a good safe storage space for you. Homak and Harbor feight make decent lockable steel safes for a lot less money than the really heavy duty stuff and thy are lighter and easier to install.

Try this, it will look great and nobody will know.

I have a very lightweight 10 gun Stack-ON safe I use for ammunition a heavier safe for the more expensive guns and a lock on a bedroom door for the less expensive guns. Also trigger locks were mentioned. I have in the past removed bolts and parts from guns, so as to render them unusable, and stored these parts in a locked box to make things safe as well. Any of these should be acceptable to keep the guns safely stored.

Do you need to purchase/do any of these things. Check the laws of your state google them or ask the police.
