DISCOVERY OPTICS [ONE OF THESE THINGS IS NOT LIKE THE OTHER]

DISCOVERY OPTICS VT-T 6-24X50 SFVF Rifle Scopes:
[Sold by ApexHorizon on Amazon]

I like to set up all of my rifles with the same scopes when I finally find one that I like..
That said, I ditched my Nikon SFP scopes, and switched to Discovery FFP scopes..
Key Words Here:
I like to set up all of my rifles with THE SAME SCOPES..

I ordered both via Amazon - Seller ApexHorizon. Dates and scopes are both marked..
Check out the two scopes, and let me know if you're all seeing what I'm seeing..

Scope 1 on the bottom has no 'flat head set screw'.
Scope 2 on the top now has a 'flat head set screw'.

Huh? What? Am I missing something?
These Are Most Definitely Not The Same Scopes!
**Did Discovery Optics make some sort of changes that I'm not aware of?
**Did I end up with a clone/counterfeit scope? If so - Which one?

I know that a bunch of you guys also have this same 'style' scope..
Could you take a look at yours, and let me know if you see that screw? Or not?

Also..

If anyone has any info on whether or not Disco changed anything recently,
I'd really like to know.. This may not be a big deal, but, it's made my OCD go off the charts..

Hopefully, they're both authentic, and I'll just have to swap one of them for the other type,
so I'll end up with 2 of the same, and know what to get the next time.. [Depending...]

Also, If one of them is actually bunk, I'll know that I need to throw a s**t fit with Amazon..

Thanks in advance for the help/info!

Gipper & Don,

Thank you guys! This is getting interesting!

So far, we're at a 50/50 ratio. haha Assuming that all our our scopes are authentic,
then maybe the older versions did not have the set screw and the new[er] models do?

Don got his in June of 18, and my 1st one could have been a 'left over' from 18,
Both with No screws..

China would definitely have all of the NOS [New Old Stock] and push that before sending the newest versions..
Gipper got his from AOP - based out of NC, so if they got the New Stock, that may explain his with the screw..

Me - After I ordered my 1st one, Amazon was completely sold out of them..
I use Prime / Amazon fulfillment - to help 'guarantee' authenticity, so, I waited for them to come back to US stock..
As soon as they did, I grabbed that one. So that may explain mine being new and having the screw..

Just throwing that idea out there too..

Don,

I think that photo is just a bit deceiving . . . An optical illusion. 😜
Actually, both scopes have the exact same markings, writing, etc. in the same font, locations, etc.
The new one just has a much smaller 'dot' on the rear/top - marking the magnification..
Other than the screw, they're identical.

I can't remember which was which but one was inspected by #01, and one was inspected by #02
Same type of inspection [passed] stickers, Then I made sure to check the boxes, contents, etc.
Everything seemed to match up 100% which is why I'm not mad, or ranting to Amazon..

Curiosity is just getting the best of me, but, I guess it'll be nice for All Of Us to figure this out.

👍

Maybe when that guy was banging the scopes against that wooden table he inadvertently knocked off the set screw, therefore they filled the hole with black plastic and put it on the market … or maybe, the guy who was knocking off all the set screws enjoyed it so much he probably knocked off several thousand set screws before admitting that he had done it. Perchance he may have even thought that it was his job to knock off set screws banging them against wooden tables … I mean … surely there had to be some purpose … something that they wanted changed about the scope, otherwise why beat the heck out of new scopes. Alas, the poor fellow will probably now get demoted to throwing the blasted things 40 yards at a soccer field. Life does get complicated.

Most likely just an update but actual internals and overall specs remain the same .. I worked in quality control in a manufacturing plant for years . Small changes are always being done to speed production and lower cost on the manufactures end . It's a Very Normal business practice . I've seen one of the Discovery clone scopes . The one I saw was like a toy , difference was VERY obvious .

Long as it's working I wouldn't sweat it

likkityspyt,

You mean to tell me that this whole time, that guy was supposed be testing the scope durability for Discovery?
I had things completely mixed up then.. I thought he probably just lost the hammer he was supposed to be using
while testing the durability of those wooden tables!! [Wood panel destructive / failure tests] For IKEA..
Wow, everything is starting to make sense now.. hahaha

Thanks for the laugh doood!

🤣

Mr. Joe,

Thanks for dropping in and double checking this for me!
Good deal, and no doubt, that all makes perfect sense.
It's nice to hear that you've actually gotten to check out a clone, and see the difference in person.
Sometimes it can be very difficult to spot [1:1 clones compared to others]
but if we're talking a day and night difference, then I/we have no worries..

Both scopes are built like a brick s**t house, and the optics are super clear
as well as the cross-hairs, markings, etc. inside.. I compared the two of them side by side..

"Don't sweat the petty things & Don't pet the sweaty things". 🤣

Thanks again man!

OK, this is off topic, but how in the world do you use your level in that position? Isn't the view blocked by your rings?

I never understood the practical use of a "level" with a scope. As long as the gun is held firmly, no wobble...perhaps bi-pod, and the shooter isn't subject to nervous jerks, seizures, or outside pressures like diarrhea or his wife screaming at him when he's taking the shot...what does it do?

If I'm shooting from an unlevel surface, which is most of the time, and my target is on the downhill side of the gully, how does a level help? I'm not bashing the use of a level, I just never found a practical use for it. But then, I'm very old and perhaps one of you young whippersnappers, in your 50's or 60's, can help me out here.

By the way, my Discovery scope is just shipped, so in a few weeks I can check to see what mine has on it. It should be the latest version...the one with the new built-in level.

Ok, I read the article. I see your point, with firearms, then it makes sense.

However, I copied this statement from the article:  "If you plan on attaching a scope level to the scope—and I strongly suggest you do if you plan to shoot past 400 yards..." (my underline)

My personal preference is not to use a level at airgun distances. It's one more distraction from taking the shot. Now...when someone finds a 'wind speed/direction indicator' scope attachment, I will sit up and take notice...because that IS a factor at airgun distances.

It's a feature some shooters swear by...some swear at...some look with disbelief...others will just shrug, continue eating their hot dogs, and wonder what the hell it all means?

I suppose I'm the guy with the hot dog. Your mileage may vary...it usually does.

PS: So I'm on Ebay and I find the exact same Discovery scope I bought, priced at $169.00 w/free shipping. That's when you scratch your chin and wonder...is it counterfeit???

DirtyDovi … Actually we may both have it wrong. I have it on good authority that the young man who was destroying all those wooden tables with the Discovery scopes has been promoted and got an easier job. He is now assigned to the motorized division where he will soon start driving land rovers over the top of the scopes. It's one of those Chinese-Russian endeavors brought on by Big Ed of Edgun fame … only this time around the land rover will be filled with 30,000 lbs of Heng Yang compressors that were returned by dis-satisfied American customers, the rubber tires will be taken off and only the rims will be used in an attempt to crush the scopes and if that doesn't work they will throw it into a Chinese Metal Shredder consisting of 2 senior citizens who had previously been convicted of drug smuggling, received the death sentence, had it commuted a life sentence of sitting in a metal dumpster with 2 SKS rifles chambered in 7.32x39 mm shooting the scopes. In fact I also have it on good authority that the set screws are actually put in there to help cover up the bullet holes. I haven't been informed as to the survival rates of the shooters … apparently the riccocheting SKS rounds seem to be taking a toll on the them as well as the scopes. Have a blessed day,

John
