Diana 34 spring replaced...this is NOT what I was expecting.

I had just got my PG2 Vortek kit last night in the mail. So I decided to install it today. This is the first time I have ever broken down the gun to this extent. But, the tear down went fine with no problems at all. I thoroughly cleaned every part and component while I had it apart and relubed all the parts that should be lubed with Moly paste using a small paint brush. The whole thing was a learning process, but no issues. On tear down the only thing I really noticed was the piston seal had a bit of a nick in it, but I was fixing to replace that anyway with the Vortek seal. I get the rifle back together and test fire it, check the safety, every thing fine. First thing I noticed was a WAY smoother shot cycle. Huge difference that was immediately noticeable.....quiet and very smooth. It's raining here today so this afternoon I caught a hole in the clouds and went outside to do a quick chrono test to see the difference. Boy was I surprised! I tested (quickly....due to the weather) RWS Super H-Points 14.2g. Because these were the pellets the rifle seemed to love the most. It gave the highest velocity and was the most accurate out of any of the pellets I have tested thus far. Bottom line......I lost 128 fps on average and reduced myself from 17 Fpe to 11.75 Fpe. I now have a sub 12 foot lb rifle. I ordered, and the label on the spring kit said it is a HO (High Output). I did notice that there is a considerable difference in spring lengths, but had heard that would be the case. I'm just wondering if I got a 12 fpe kit by mistake. I honestly was not expecting much if any of a velocity increase because the rifle already was at around 725-740 fps. But I darn sure wasn't expecting a decrease......especially of this magnitude. Any of you with any experience with this? Sure could use an explanation.

Thanks in advance.

I had that problem on an HW 35. The new piston seal was too tight. I have heard of guys who lightly sanded the seal to thin it up a little so it doesn’t fit quite as tight. I put the factory piston seal back in mine and only used the other parts. See if anybody else chimes in.

You know....it's the first time I've done this.... So, I wasn't real sure.....but I swear, that new Vortek seal was Tight!. I have pulled the piston out once before and it pushed into the cylinder much easier with the original piston seal. It could be that simple. Ya think?

ABSOLUTELY could be too tight a seal and why I suggested it right away. Remove and sand as uniformly as possible so that the fit is snug(ish) but not too much. Use you other seal as somewhat of a guide. Slightly tight is OK and will break in over time.

This makes sense to me. I thought it was way too tight. But, ya know, I am in the learning as I go phase and figured that just maybe this new Vortek seal is supposed be this tight. Too much resistance though.........this has to be the problem...........I hope!!!

I did debur and polish some things while I was in there. I really spent some time on this. But, I don't feel comfortable sanding the seal. I will order a couple of spares tonight and as soon as they get here I'll tear it down again and replace the seal.

Thank you so much Mike and Cahil. You both lead to the same direction and I'll see if this is the correct fix.

Greenterror,

I plan on shooting as much as I can over the next couple of days, weather permitting. We have lots rain here now. I think it will probably improve some with plenty of shooting. But I can't see it picking up 100+ fps from fire cycle repetition. I have a piston seal on order from JM at Air Rifle Headquarters. I don't know if it will do well with the Vortek spring or not. I don't see why it wouldn't. It will be interesting to see what Vortek's response will be in regards to the email that I sent them. Bottom line, the issue has to lie in either the seal or the spring. I am at this point very suspect of both. I really think that they have a very fine product and I am not "soured" on them at all. I just think that either the spring or seal is incorrect for my intended application. And yes, PA will not have the OE Diana piston seal in until the end of the month they say. Thank you.

Best of luck, what I posted was just what I understood from reading up, now I'm not sure what to think, before I bought the seal, I emailed Vortek and asked if this seal would work with the OEM spring and they said yes. I'll post tomorrow what my gun is shooting, would like to hear what vortek has to say about your setup.

I think that seal you have will work just fine with the Diana spring. Looking forward to hearing how well yours does for you.
