Definition of "Long Range"?

101+ yards with any projectile. 

Is there an accepted definition for "Long Range", Or is it basically any distance difficult for the platform?

For example, 100 yards with a 12FPE springer is long range for the caliber and power. Just curious.

I don't know if there is, but I definitely agree that in practice it is specific to the tools at hand. I too have things that shoot stuff that could not be used for 100 yards. Conversely, for a .408 Cheyenne Tactical, .50BMG or .338 Lapua, 100 yards is hardly long range. You could 10X that in some cases.

For air rifle, I'd be happy to agree that 100 yards is always "long range", but as you say, for a springer, 100 yds isn't realistic, so 50-75 yards might be "long range" in that case.

if you picture yourself as a sniper and 'need' to shoot at small pests your perfectly capable of stalking within 20 yards of, but prefer to take pot shots at them from 100+ .. thats 'long range ' lol ...

Weapon specific lingo as was said above using a club 10 yards is long range.

If it’s inanimate objects, out to 104 yards for me. Critters or small pest? Anything over 50 yards is long range for me.

it's all relative,but a easy answer would be the" practical" limits of what you are using.

If you're talking "airgun hunting" where you need to hit a kill zone on the first shot, judge the wind, cold bore and no sighters I'd say about 75 yards on out for a good PCP. Maybe 10-15 yards less for a springer. That's just me though.

That's pretty much perfect!

My definition of long range with an airgun is simple. If misjudging your target by 2 yards causes you to miss, you are shooting long range with whatever gun you’re using. Every gun, pellet, slug combo will define where this occurs on the yardage scale.

Shooting .177 pellets, i generally call +50 Meters for long range, but in general i do not call it any range if your 5 shot group are much larger than a golf ball.

I think it all depends.

The rest of these are my opinion:

• My Marauder - 75 yards
• Pellets in general - 100 yards
• Slugs - Well, that still seems up to discussion. 100 yards is easy, 200 doable - 300 that's really long range

So, I think it depends on your setup, goals, equipment, and everything else. It's for you to decide.

I'd been shooting airguns a couple of years before I bought a PCP and started extending my sighting distance. Underwhelmed, I called the manufacturer and asked how far this thing could shoot accurately. He came back with "as far as you can shoot and keep everything within an inch. I went right back to 50 yards for PCP and 30/35 yards for the high end springers and Theobens. Still a lot of fun, too.

Long range for my nephews Eskopeta foot pump air rifle in the Philippines was a 75-yard shot on a frog with a 3-9X Pride Fowler Rapid reticle we mounted along the barrel. I ran the ballistics on Chairgun and with a 20-yd. zero, it required 25 MOA compensation which is right at the bottom post of that particular FFP reticle. 1st shot connection, was truly a great memorable shot. Love the math and applying subtension (reticles and iron sights) for long-range zeroing and rangefinding even on the other side of the planet.

Good question, My definition would be the extremes of your rifles reach.. Like a sub 12 air rifle using a diablo shaped projectile 100 yards is long range...I'm out at 150 yards shooting groups under 2" with a sub 12 .177 impact....Keep on pushing out I say! 

"Long Range" to me is considering having to get a decent spotting scope, so I don't have to constantly walk out there and look at the target. Like I was having to do yesterday just shooting at 97YD.

10 years ago trying to determine which pellet preformed best in winds for FT use. Cold bore three 5 shot groups (oops) Jsb 10.3 from the tin @ a measured 110 yards w/swirling winds & note some pellets did NOT actually penetrate the target but just knocked off paint which makes me think this is pretty well the out limit at 800fps in .177?

Long range is when you need over 10 mils or 35 MOA of elevation. Ultra long range is generally needing over 120 MOA or over 35 mils of elevation or the bullet is falling straight down to the ground! LOL
