Dedicated slug gun??

Hi Guys and Gals,

Decided I have been a very good boy this year and deserve a new toy....

I have dipped my toes in the water with slugs lately and am really enjoying it so want to get a dedicated slug shooter....

Could just ear mark one of my current guns for the task but wanted to get others input plus this way I can buy a new gun so win win!

What gun/slug combo have you had the best results with?? I have no brand preference (would be nice to go with a non FX product but not a deal breaker) and a "healthy" budget so fire away....

Would be great to buy a proven slug shooter as I know even within a brand and model mileage my vary so even better if you want to part with it!!

Leaning towards an Uragan King cause well they look cool and have had good luck with my Uragan .30 and .22 with NSA slugs...

Am open to caliber etc. but noise is a factor (doesn't need to be mouse fart quiet)....

Why dont you have a custom barrel cut for any of your other guns or something like that.

Before any slug liners or this mainstream popularity of slugs I bought a LW unchoked polygon from Germany in .22 as a blank. Got a local machine shop to turn it to fit first a Royale 500 then had an adapter made up and use it now in a Boss.

Very rewarding and it's very accurate with a variety of slugs. Maybe get something made for your RW? Whatever you choose make sure it makes lots of power if you want it to then you can shoot a wide variety of weights at speed. 900-1000fps with 30gr would be a good goal in .22 for example.

I've shot lots and lots of slugs in .22, .25 and .30. .22 is my favorite, .30 a close second.

I agree with Clem. I've run the gamut over the years with slugs. A dedicated bbl. such as the
Walther poly, or TJ's made just for slugs is your best bet. I like your idea of the King platform. Lots of air, Just need to install a proper bbl.

At the moment, I am playing with an FX Superior Heavy in .22 (218) CF Wrapped and having wonderful luck once I removed the Choke. I also got in from
Brownell's barrel liners in .223 rimfire. Both 1-20 and 1-16 Twist. They are very inexpensive and deadly accurate.

At 35 bucks each, you can't beat the deal!

While FX make great products , slug shooters is not their forte. Sure they have the impact that is able to shoot them but at low power 60 to 75 fpe . If I were to look into a dedicated bullet shooter with real power. The Texan would be real high on the list in .257. You didn’t mention the range you intend to shoot at but since it’s bullets and not light weight “slugs “ I’m thinking 100yards plus to start
If .257 is not what you’re looking for a .223 would be my second choice . To me a real bullet shooter in .22 starts at 90 FPE and .257 starts at 140FPE. The others are just wannabes.I don’t know of any off the shelf air rifles that have magazines long enough to fit true heavy bullets. I have a converted Winchester 70-35 that has a 1:14 TJ’s .257 fit to the action. I did have to sleeve the magazine for the smaller bullets but it takes the 257420 (.6”) long bullets with a few thousand to spare.

We have had VERY good accuracy with the Safari in 25 cal with 34 gn NSAs and in 30 cal with NSAs, but can't remember the weight. The 25 was every bit as good with the slugs at 100 compared to the King H Mk2s and though the 30 shot extremely well with the 51 gn, it was better yet with the slugs.

The EVOL 30 is a really good bet, as well. He uses unchoked barrels.... last I knew were from TJ, but will set it up for slugs, regardless. My 22 is a Standard, so not intended to shoot heavy projectiles but the Long is intended for more power and should effortlessly push slugs in the 20 to 30 gn area.

Uragans are pretty good.... as would be a Prophet.

I finally got tired of taking a great pellet gun and making it a slug gun. Only to miss shooting pellets out of them so I would keep switching them back and forth. I also got tired of having to build barrels and lean on once friendly guns and make them not so friendly. I finally bought another Impact after a 3 year hiatus. It will be slugs only. I don’t feel the need to volume shoot a slug gun like I do pellets. Not because of price but more do to safety. The funny thing is that usually within a few days of switching lets say my RTI back to pellets, I would have a situation that required a slug gun. Now I’m good. Good luck on your quest for a foundation.

A variety of NSAs and DRigs Varmint knockers pretty much everything I fed it shot good.

You only shoot slugs or FX hybrids for targets past 80 yards. Such a Waste of money and serious safety back drop concerns if you don't have at least 100 - 200+ yards to safely shoot slugs. Otherwise best to stick with pellets if shooting under 80 yards.
