I use the same oil thats ran in the pump sump to lube the rings in the 1st and 2nd stage. I dipped my fingers in the oil and apply a thin film the the rings right before reassembly. You would never assemble motors or compressor pistons dry or with any other lube other than whats ran in the pump under normal conditions. The oil keeps the rings from scuffing the cylinder walls where the piston rides, and helps the rings form a good seal. Just remember, a thin film. Its a case of a dab will do, big glob will screw.

For those not aware the second stage piston has since been beefed up a bit, had the same happen last year myself. As above just replaced the entire two piston set and the geen seals between upper and lower cylinders. Has been working fine since then. I do top off a 45 min scba tank but do it in 5 min run time intervals letting it cool to room temps between runs. I was limiting run times last year to 20 minutes but have since switched to 5 minutes max. These compressors may not be perfect but have met my needs thus far and are pretty simple and inexpensive to repair. If the main motor ever gives up I will replace the entire compressor with a new one, same brand. I have also when home been filling direct to rifle instead of using my scba tank, rifle fills in under 30 seconds. I figured I would put less stress on the compressor doing this when home instead of just topping off from my tank., it's just not as convenient as using the tank. I see a small buddy bottle in my future for short shooting sessions splitting the difference between the large tank and single gun fills.
