Custom Armada for EBR

I've been working on an HP Armada .22 to use at some EBR matches this year. I wanted to shoot JSB 34gr Beast, but initial tests for long range accuracy were dismal. I was pleased though when testing a couple of other projectiles:

I'll be running some more tests at reduced fps/fpe soon.

All single loaded- Try H&N Baracuda 21.1 5.53 and Seneca 28.5 Domed and FX Hybrid slugs set speeds including and between 950-1050fps. Set the speed where is most accurate assuming you're using the older factory CROSMAN typically oversized barrel. One of these should be a winner for you. Yo!

It has an FX 700mm slug barrel.

Holy crap!!! Tried them FX Hybrids yet? Yo!

Three of us had an informal 100yd benchrest pellet only match today. I shot the 25grRD at a slower 980fps and they were awful. For some reason they prefer to be shot VERY fast with this barrel. 980fps was bad, 1055fps was not bad.

After the match, I shot one 6 shot group with the 27gr NSA .218" slugs for the first time. At 945fps.

Under an MOA! That looked even better than the .217" that also shot well at 1020fps, and today at 945fps. So far, the slugs look good from 945fps-1020fps.

Most pellets work OK out to 50yds. That's what they are designed for. I'm starting to think bechrest matches in the 75yd to 100yd should not be limited to pellets. It's like were trying to see who can shoot at 100yds with something that was not really intended for those distances. It seems wrong, and whoever does this "wrong" thing the best, is the winner. It seems that there is now a much greater selection of heavy slugs vs heavy pellets. In the "real" world, it's more likely that shooters will be choosing slugs when shooting airguns in the 100+yd range.

.30, 50gr, 100fpe "pellets"? Doesn't that go against the reasons for using a pellet?

I think you are exactly right, Scott....but for some reason people really get charged up to shoot pellets at 100y. The luck factor needed to win a 100y match is probably twice that of a 75y. AOA should have left the matches at 75. BR matches should be set up to reduce the element of luck that plays into a win to a minimum. The guns are simply not that capable at 100y in the winds typically encountered.

Yep and yep!

Hopefully as the years go by the slug thing, as well as the pellet thing, will evolve into their own target sizes and appropriate distances. It'd be neat if they can figure out slug, barrel/twist/all dimensions, and rifle combo's capable of 1/2" in perfect conditions.

I wonder if the indoor Lapua test facility in Mesa AZ can be rented for a few hours here and there because 100M is available and they have a vice/jig system set up already.

The long range airgun benchrest matches that I'd planned on attending last year were cancelled. In that time frame, my Armada benchrest build has evolved through on going iterations. And I've acquired more accessories to support that endeavor (including a Coltri MCH6 compressor, and LabRadar chronograph). After experimenting with a couple of .22 barrels, I'm now using a .25/.257 caliber barrel. Current plans are to shoot JSB 34gr King Heavy for pellet classes and 70gr slugs for any slug classes. Specs are: 36" barrel, Cothran Powerhouse valve, custom cast breach, electronic hammer, hot swap-able bottle, hot swap-able transfer ports. 350cc, 450cc, 580cc, up to 2000cc. I went to the range today to shoot some slugs from my new Arsenal mold. 70gr@950fps, 100m. I used a little over 500psi of air from the 2000cc bottle for 50 shots. Groups were about 2moa in the wind. I'll likely get 180 slug shots at 145fpe with the 2000cc bottle.
