Curious about the initial “one gun only”

we’ve all said it in the beginning , when we first dove into the dark side and realized the cost to get into this hobby, that we’re gonna get one gun and one only. We had to pick wisely. We asked the veterans of this hobby thru the forums to help us decide on caliber and gun type recommendations. We all said we would use it for target shooting, plinking, and the occasional pest dispatching when asked of our goals, and we assured everyone that asked that we had our air supply source figured out. Yup, one gun is all we needed.

How many of you have actually stuck to that? A recent post by RANGUR1 regarding tuning for power and a reply about having a second, lower powered gun sparked my curiosity on this, if wether we still are owners of that one gun.

Im not asking this to folks that have bought and sold, and then ended up with one gun. I’m asking this to the folks that have only ever bought one pcp, like they said they would.

i know I failed in my promise.

I remember back when I first got my 177 beeman R10, and said that’s all I need. Then the gas ram RX came out, and had to have that. Then beeman came out with a Rapid7, which I believe was a pcp in its infancy. I paid no attention to that, as I found it stupid to have to rely on a separate air source. About that time I put away the Airguns, to raise a family and remodel a home for 14 years, lol.

It was in October of 2017 I decided to make a jump, and looking at the price tag of a Marauder, hill pump, scope, rings, pellets, etc., etc. I said this one here should do me. It’s all I need. I promised to myself between the break barrels and this, I’m good. It was Teds Holdover and his videos that mesmerized me with the accuracy, so I’m blaming him.

Then I learned about tanks vs pumping

then I learned about compressors vs driving twice a week for a fill up

then I wanted to try a 30. Then then I see COOTERTWO with all his Airguns, which let me think that it’s ok to have a second gun(ha ha cootertwo!)

Then, worst of it all, I found AGN and it’s classifieds section!

Somewhere out there is someone with his first Gauntlet, or his first being a Crown, or a Royale, or a Marauder that stuck to just one gun.

I too had planned on buying only one PCP with a multiple caliber and power adjustable platform. After much research the good first choice was the Impact with it's multiple caliber abilities and plenty of power adjustment, both up and down for whatever shooting sport and game. I was very happy with the results I was getting as a small bore PCP. But here's where I fell off the wagon.

I discovered that the Impact's design platform was going to fall short for true big bore performance with slugs for ethical hunting of big game that I was also looking for. Had the Impact utilized a wider magazine and breech area for longer heavier slug capabilities, and possibly came out with the .357 sooner, then I would have stuck with it and kept the one gun only "promise".

So then, through more research, the AAA Slayer line was discovered to fill all the big bore qualities that I was seeking. These attributes included, accuracy, high power, multiple shot and magazine fed, and being light and short enough to be comfortable in a bush hiking type of hunting scenario. Are there other airguns out there that interest me? Sure, but I have kept my collection down to the necessary minimum, and with these there's no need for more really.

You really can't, the 177 you shoot targets in the backyard with is unethical for a Woodchuck at longer distances. I think if I had to the FX platform with a 22 slug barrel, normal length pellet, and super short pellet barrel with the ability to adjust from 10-70 FPE would do it for me. The aggravation of resighting, plus the cost makes the ownership of a variety of guns a better choice in my case.

After being a gun collector most of my life I had no such "one gun" delusions going into this at all! :p

Ditto, and I'll add that airguns are no where near the economics around watch collecting lol. There are a lot of similarities with the two hobbies though, where you'll find the infamous "minimalist" collectors. They are convinced that there is one perfect airgun / watch that suits them, but the reality is perfection is all mental. Obsession over the perfect replacement is inevitable, and they become serial flippers that are never totally satisfied.

I think it's possible to be completely content with just one airgun, but I can't see having less than three myself (yet I have 9 PCPs right now 😂).

Well, I can't recall there ever being a "only gun" scenario. But I did convince myself I could get a rifle to fill all my needs recently. Before it arrived I had already bought a 177 pcp pistol 😂 got the Continuum, another crown, an impact, and a whole slew of other guns. The Continuum is still my go to. But I shoot almost all of my 7 guns very regularly

I’ve come to the conclusion that 4 guns is the perfect number. I’ve had more and I’ve had less at times.....mostly springers and less expensive pcp’s. Sold them off and this is my collection/soon to be in my collection:

1. Benjamin prod pistol .22 - American made, more or less. Gotta have one pistol and this thing is so much fun and darn good accuracy.

2. Brocock bantam sniper hp .22 - British made. Simple adjustment for everywhere from 12 fpe up to 50 fpe for pesting and long range shooting.

3. Wheirauch HW100T .177 - German made. Just gathered the necessary funds and ordered it yesterday. I want a .177 for backyard target shooting and possibly a foray into HFT in the future.

4. Eastern European bullpup in .25 or .30. Because why not. Hopefully in my future to round out the perfect 4 gun collection.

Mark Twain has a quote about a man with one gun:

"Beware the man who only has one gun. He probably knows how to use it!"

I fail in that category. Each purchase was “going to be the last one” or at least that is what I.told the wife

Nitro Piston .177 begat

PROD .22 begat

Gamo Urban (depickled now with DFL koi) .22 begat

BSA R10SE Huma .22 begat

Benjamin Traveler fills them all nicely.
