Culling Feral Cats

I just watched a video on Australia's feral cat problem and can't help but wonder if this would be a job for someone with an airgun. In the video, the hunters try using rifles to hunt feral cats but I wonder if feral cats don't behave like bobcats or wildcats. When I visit my parents, I usually hunt wild dogs just like how I hunt coyotes and the wild dogs come in more aggressively then coyotes. The wild dogs are usually not cautious like coyotes which makes them a little easier to hunt.

I remember reading a story about LA's problem with feral cats but with peta, most people have to live with the destruction the cats causing to the surrounding wild life. Australia also has to deal with people like peta and I just don't understand why they, peta, ignore the problem these cats are causing but focus on attacking the people who are trying to help the wild life and the farmers.

Does Puerto Rico have this problem with the peta?


 
I also am actively hunting "wild" dogs (If it crosses onto my 500 acres then it is considered wild). They have been disturbing my quail and game populations as well as my cattle. I have taken 3 in the last couple of months. People are in a bad habit of disposing of unwanted animals by dumping them near my gate on the highway probably thinking someone will take them in and not realizing that they will either starve or make a pack which is a serious threat to livestock!

Im assuming they give them to the Aborigines? iv eat bob cat and taste like chicken.It was good" im assuming house cat would be even better? I dont have any cats as i have tame squirrels and birds.The people down the st. have all the cats and no critters.I Have a small dog and he keeps the cats out of the yard"Cats are good in big city's as their is nothing for them to hunt.Try to keep them in the yard in the county forget it"here's Mr. catter"

Suffice to say PETA's statement regarding the trail-runner that recently killed an attacking mountain lion with his bare hands expressed regret that the attacker died in mid-attack. That really tells you all you need to know about PETA's grasp on REALITY.

One of the greatest joys I have when I go hunting is not that fact of killing but the help I'm giving to the load owners. For my parents, I went out hunting wild dogs for just no reason but after listening to my dad of how mad he was about losing a calf a year to wild dogs, it gives me a determination to help in some way. When I hunt prairie dogs, I have the satisfaction of helping the landowner to not lose another cow or horse to a broken leg. A few weekends ago, I got many thank you's from dairy farmers when I killed hundreds of pigeons. To me, this is worth the cost of gas, food, lodging, and equipment.

So, if I had the money, I would gladly make a trip to Australia or Puerto Rico.

Cats are cute,butt are natural born killers,it is instinctive,I have a bad cat problem,I can not kill them and would find it hard to do.I am going to trap them....not to worry I will not let them loose where thy are still be problems for others.

Yes ,wild dogs are tuff and kill many sheep and cows ,it is a pity people are not more responsible...like get your pets neutered.

Got home the other day to find a cat getting "banged" in my driveway and 4 other male cats waiting their turn...yea you can smell em..they are a bigger problem than squirrels or raccoons..though raccoons are more destructive,sorry about my rave,I psyching myself out to do what has to be done..

If you do some research there might be someone in your area that spays and neuters feral cats free of charge-it's an intermediate solution but at least the ferals won't breed...

We had to take advantage of this as my aging mother-in-law had dozens of feral cats hanging around her house-of course "only a couple of them are mine" was her explanation. We did get as many as we could trap spayed and neutered.

So you went to the effort of catching them, only to let them go again ??? - you do realise that spayed / neutered cats still prey on native wild life right ?

The only good feral cat is a dead one !

how do i distinguish a feral cat from my neighbors indoor/outdoor cat ? or is any outdoor cat fair game?

This is the main problem I'm facing here at my house. For some reason, the neighborhood cats all decided to piss on our bushes in front of our house. I was going to camp outside and start shooting but I stopped because I didn't want to risk killing someone's cat. I ended just pulling the bushes out and they haven't been back

Sonny, feral or not, unspayed and unneutered outdoor cats create more ferals to add to the problem. Notching or clipping one ear while spaying or neutering is a common (universal?) practice used to identify reproductive (in)ability. Per my article posted above, if I see a stray cat that hasn't already attacked my pets, I always check its ears (easy through a rifle scope) before executing a stray cat.

JSP, thanks for the nice feedback. I was beginning to wonder if anyone read it. My suspicions remain that individual attention-spans here average about 20 seconds; but you've shown there are exceptions. Glad you enjoyed the story.

Yeah an extremely destructive invasive species. Ferrets are better mousers, and native to north america. Hey why do cat people's cats get to poop in my yard and chase the squirrels where every they want. But if my bulldog gets out to take a piss on the curb Watch out!!! He might take a nap!

Ferrell cats get out of control FAST!!!! I have seen them way out in the middle of know where, must have been dumped or who knows. They kill every thing , they kill all the quail around here. Just for sport they don't eat them. Dam cat lady leaves piles out for them. When we first moved in damn things would try to get in the house. The dog has earned his keep
