Crossman 2240 or 2240xl ?

If you want to screw a mod on it out of the box, the XL. Putting sights of any sort on the plain 2240, other than iron, will require work, since the breech doesn’t have grooves. I got one (2240XL), put a 0dB on it out of the box, clamped a Romeo 5 red dot on it and didn’t have to adjust the sights at 10-11 yards. Mine prefers RWS Meisterkugln pellets. I really like the shake-awake feature on the Romeo 5.

The 2240 has rudimentary open sights that werq quite well. It does not however have any way to attach a moderator and it is a fairly loud gun so you probly want one. Nor, as mentioned above, does it have an way to attach a scope or red dot. Considering the price for the steel breech and moderator adapter, when purchased separately, the 2240XL is a good deal.

The 2240XL does not come with any sights so you would need to use a red dot or scope. Expect you could also just twist the moderator adapter 180 degrees and use a longer Allen screw, which is what I suspect is there, for the front sight. There are several rear sight choices available. Being able to screw on a moderator is a good thing although TKO makes some nice slip on units for the 22xx guns that werq well.

EDIT;

Since you are buying one of the 22xx pistol you will likely be needing several of these links to mod it. ;^)

I chose the standard 2240. I wanted a steel breech but I also wanted the bolt handle on the left side. I shoot a pistol right handed so it's easier to reload with a left handed bolt.

I bought an ambidextrous (I probably misspelled that) steel breech from Alchemy Airwerks. This gives me the the option of mounting the bolt handle on either side. It also has a dove tail to mount your red dot and you can still mount the original factory rear sight as I have done.

I have recently purchased the 2240 and modified it to my liking If you like to tinker and do your own upgrades that is the way to go. If you want to add a scope and just go shooting then the 2240XL is perfect. If I buy another Crosman pistol it will be the xl. Mine was very accurate right out of the box and from what I have read you would need to pay several times the price to get a more accurate gun.
