Crosman 761XL

Just received a Crosman 761XL. Looks in very nice shape. Had to replace the quad ring in the exhaust valve. It was the first time the gun had been taken apart.
while apart, I noticed the barrel does not appear to be rifled. Also, the front sight has no place for a hood. I always thought these rifles had a hooded sight and a rifled barrel. Anyone else ever had one like this?

 I think what you have is a re-issue of the 761 XL, as noted on the box it's a commemorative. I think this re-issue is the reason for the front sight difference and non rifled barrel you mention. From doing some looking around Crosman seems to date at least some of their guns in the serial number e.g. my 761 XL starts with 578. This according to some research means the rifle was produced in May of '78 and it does have rifling. My XL is a 1st variant which can be easily seen as it has a side BB loading port that is teardrop shaped rather than rectangular. Your XL has a serial number of just 715 and a rectangular loading port, those two should not be if it were an original issue.

Sounds right. I dug around and found out mine was made in 1975 and was released to commemorate the 75th anniversary of the Coleman company.
It is self cocking and the same internally as first variant 760s. It differs from a standard 761XL in that the front site is different, bb loading port is rectangular instead of teardrop, and the barrel is smooth even though on the box it says it is button rifled. If it is rifled, the rifling is so light that I cannot easily tell by looking in the bore with a light (barrel removed). It is quite accurate at 20 yards with pellets and shoots average of 515 FPS with JSB exact express 7.87 grain 10 pumps.
maybe the serial number relates to the Coleman issued ones.
Good to know!

1975 does not sound correct for your rifle but possibly as you mentioned the Coleman connection has something to do with things. The 1st variant XL was made from '72-78 and those had the rifled barrels, teardrop BB loading port and serial numbers of 9 digits or so. The 2nd variant was produced from '78-81 and had the rectangular loading port. If you contact Crosman they might be able to provide all the correct info on it.

I sure appreciate all the input regarding this rifle. I was not aware first variant 761s had a teardrop port. I would have thought it was the other way around. My first variant 760 has a rectangular one.
I am aware that rifled barrels can be found for some of these but it would have to be one that fits this type of rifle with the breech cut into the barrel. I would not change it though as I will leave this one as it came to me.
I was originally just wondering if anyone has ever had one like this before because I would like to know if theirs is the same.

Thanks DualMagMike. That info really helped. I don’t know if this matters but this is a Canadian version. It must be from 78-81 like you suggested and I guess Canadian ones must not have come with rifled barrels.
I had always thought rectangular loading ports were the first variant (760) style and teardrop was on later models. But 761 must have used teardrop style first. Thanks again.

Kind of what I was trying to say, either the Coleman or the Canadian connection likely has some bearing on this model/version. Hard to tell sometimes what one is trying to say in a post/email/text and I didn't want to start arguing plus I'm no Crosman expert. But the research I did shows the features I mentioned (loading port, front sight, rifling) and the time frame they go with likely without inclusion of Canadian or Coleman entities. Also why I suggested contacting Crosman they may or may not be a big help in telling you just what this is and it might turn out to pretty rare? Any info right from the maker would be nice to have...

The rectangular loading port on the 760's came first. The teardrop port cover is from the Pumpmaster's. Both my 761XL's have the rectangular port cover. The less purty one was built 3/76. The near perfect one has four zero's at the beginning of the serial number,. Then"....9083".

3/76 version;

Purtier version I have marked in my pic folder as 11/72?;

Both have the rectangular loading port cover;

Both the 11/72 & 3/76 version have the grooved front sight for the slide-on globe. Like to find a couple to make them a bit more complete.

Hello. Thank you for the information. Your 761s look very nice. The one I have looks exactly the same as yours. Self cocking, rectangular loading port, same wood and brass receiver.
what differs is the barrel is not rifled and the front sight has no place for a hood. The rifle is in like new condition. I’m guessing someone must have swapped out the barrel for a standard barrel some years ago.
I really think it was made in the seventies because it is self cocking. They stopped producing those around 1977 I think?
I have been trying to phone Crosman to ask them but they are closed. One of these days, I will get through.
Once I talk to them, I will let you know what they tell me.
If you can tell me anything, I’d sure appreciate it. I’ve seen a lot of your collection and it is very impressive. I think you really know your stuff about these rifles. I hope Crosman will tell me why mine has a weird serial number and what it means as far as year of manufacture.
