Crosman 454 not moving BBs after seal rebuild kit install

Hey guys & girls. My Crosman 454 CO2 pistol wasn't sealing the cartridges correctly (letting all the air out upon piercing) so I bought a seal kit and swapped out the valve and o-rings. Put it all back together, popped in a fresh CO2 cartridge (it seemed to hold. Could not hear any air escaping), and loaded it up with BBs. Upon firing it, I could see gas coming out of the barrel, but did not hit the target. Checked and saw after multiple trigger pulls, the BBs are not moving the loading lever on the top of the gun. Pulled 15-20 more times, and got nothing out of the barrel except gas. BBs are not moving thru the gun.

I pulled it apart again just now, looking for something obvious, and cannot find anything. Anyone have one of these and have ideas? I'm stumped.

I think I have it fixed.

I backed off the cap head set screw that holds the barrel half a turn. I think I had it too tight, not letting the BBs into the barrel. I could get a shot off occasionally, but I'm guessing a BB would get stuck, and only exit the barrel once I put 10-12 trigger pulls to it, which to me means that once I put enough gas behind it, it would squeeze past. That barrel is *technically* metal, but it's compressible. Also, I had trouble with the trigger not coming back to starting position regularly. After each shot I had to really play with it in order to get it to drop again. A little grease on the trigger metal arm helped with that too.

I just put 30-40 BBs into the target box in the garage rapidly and it worked. Will run a full cartridge thru it and see how it holds up. Thanks for all the tips, people!

WOW! A 454, that takes me back. I bought one waaaay back in the mid 70s to take care of the starlings and grackles that were decimating our cherry orchard. I needed a pistol I could carry and take quick shots while in the field. That little wonder took 1,000s of birds! My then girl friend stopped by one day and helped me clean up the aftermath. We took a wheelbarrow full out of the orchard that day. That's when I knew she was the one. We will be married 42 years this May. I had that gun until it was lost during a move in 1994.

Hmmm...the BB advancement thing seems to be fixed, and the CO2 seal seems to be fixed, but...the trigger sticks (and sticks hard) after every other pull. Doesn't come back easily either. If you fire rapidly, it's better, but the "aim slowly and shoot with purpose" thing sticks it at the rear of the trigger guard nearly every time. I pulled it apart (again) and....the springs are routed exactly the same way there were when I opened it for the first time. Ideas? Would love to fix this.

Hi. Craig Borgman here,

Happened to run across an old message that indicated you were interested in helping others with the 454.

I got my dad's old 454 when he passed many years ago. He managed to do a bit of damage trying to "rebuild" it.

I have managed to make the cup and screw for the CO2 capsule work again, and straightened the frame carefully.

Old CO2 cartridge put in (about 45 years old), 5 to 8 ft output distance. OK. At least it fires.

I took out the ring screw and retainer ring, got the old seal out, looked like a bathroom faucet replacement vale. Used a bathroom faucet replacement valve seal of proper size,

still not good, but consistent 8 ft range. New correct seal I assume? O-ring too?

A guy on eBay sells sets cheapest I've found, but haven't purchased yet.

Trigger won't reset either. Saw your discussion about spring replacement with another person, so I assume you would suggest the same?

Is that the CRS577-006 Spring?

Would greatly appreciate feedback.

Thanks.

Craig

(Hope I did this message thing right)

Hiya. First off, yes, you should buy the OEM valve seal and o-ring. Cheap. I checked back and bought mine off ebay. I did not buy from this guy, but it was a kit like this:

I did also buy the trigger spring. I may have found it @ ebay as well. Not sure, but it looks like this:

https://www.jgairguns.biz/454-c-78_89_161/crs577079-trigger-return-spring-p-10609.html

I also bought a new pkg of 3/32" ball bearings. Get a 5 pk. You will lose them trying to install them. This helped my safety slide work better. Little grease helps hold them in. And go to Walmart, etc and get some NEW Co2 cartridges, yes?

That spring you are talking about is not the trigger return spring.

Oh, and once you get it fixed, like all CO2 guns, burn up the whole CO2 cartridge before you put it away. Don't leave pressure on the seals. On a pump gun, store it unpumped, of course, for the same reason.
