So I got hooked on the PP700 in pistol form, I even shocked myself by sniping a sparrow from 15 yards away with a pistol scope Freehand. However as much as I love that PP700 I really don’t like the grip and the nose heavy balance. So I’m looking at PP800 and 1701p and wondering if anyone that have both to compare them as to which one is better being a pistol. Other suggestions are welcome also but I must have silencer to make it ultra quiet, don’t need more than 650fps in 177 because it’s going to be 15 yards and under.

Get the 1701P you won't regret it. Start with drilling the (not the original one if it's got 5 year warranty you need to put it back if ever needs to send for warranty) your extra TP from your other gun the smaller TP to 0.067 along with the B Staley O-Ring mod and see if thats enough for your needs for better shot count otherwise 0.080 with B Staley mod will probably be more power than you want for around 20-24 shots. Use that extra unused 1720T TP the smaller one to drill out that you already have. Cool if you add a RAI AR carbine stock adapter and side folding add on too.

It is also more accurate than the P700. Buy a TKO slip on silencer too. Polish the trigger contact points to get a 4-5oz trigger if you want.

I have not had a pp800 but had two pp700 and two 1720t. The 1720 is hands down the more accurate of the two. I also have a fair amount of higher end FT style rifles and the 1720 is just as capable.

pretty much the only things I have done to it are what was mentioned above. I did go with a DonnyFL adapter and ldc. Solid pistols. 


one thing that doesn’t get mentioned all that much when comparing them to the pp series guns is parts. With the crosman/Benjamin stuff you just make a phone call and have whatever factory parts you want in a few days to a week. Good luck getting that with a pp.

The way I would put it is one is a tinkerer's platform and one is pretty much ready to go.

The biggest distinction will generally be the barrels. SPA seems quite capable of making good barrels but their workmanship is very sketchy in my experience. Two of four I own had rifling damage at the muzzle that I had to cut off and recrown. With that fixed, they both group very well. They happened to be long barrels. The two pistol barrels only needed the crowns retouched.

Meanwhile the 1701P has a Lothar Walther barrel which is about as close as you can get to a sure thing it will be accurate. Not only that but it will probably do well with a broad range of pellets thanks to being choked.

You will pay for the though...it's almost twice as expensive as the PP800.

x2 on Odoyle's recommendation to do the bstaley O-ring buffer mod on the Crosman if you go that route.

just found this picture and helped address the balance issue, 1701 is a lot shorter so it shouldn’t be as nose heavy. 


as far as cost goes with the AGN discount there won’t be much of a price difference but have to wait like for years. Good thing I’m not in a hurry really. Think I’ll order a huggett atom moderator and a Donnyfl adapter for it while I wait. 


totally agree on SPA QC, one of my PP700 needed some work to get rid of the breach pop and my PP750 has a crooked air tube and mag feed is hit and miss at best. once I get the crooked air tube fixed I’ll most likely sell it, not sure why but I really enjoy single loading but could be mag feed sucks, better with carm mags. Plus 1701p is one of few things that’s still made here in Murcia with known good quality and crazy aftermarket support. Off I go on a hunt for a good pistol grip.

The pp800 is a great budget pistol. However the overall fit and finish is not as good as the 1701. The wood or synthetic grips are nowhere as comfortable as the 1701. And the trigger on the 1701 is far superior. Accuracy on my 177 and 25 pp800s is stellar, so no issues there. But the valving and tune on the pp800 is not as good as the 1701 either. (less consistent power delivery)

Here's one of mine with modified and now comfortable grip, lol.

Nervoustrig was dead on. IMHO you MIGHT get lucky and get a barrel that doesn't need help.

I have the PP700S-A and two barrels for it. Both needed crowning and the .22 wouldn't even accept a pellet because of a nasty burr. Terrible QC on barrels. The rest of the gun is SPOT ON!

Both barrels are great performers after some elbow grease and I'm getting 40 shots in .177 at 700fps with HN Hunter Extremes. Not bad.

Now you know they are very different "pistols" the 1701P Being the better one..

I have them both,the 1701P is the way to go,it gets a lot of shots to a fill and I do not think it needs a LDC.

I always put a target style grip on my pistols,it helps a lot...

The 1701 being the better pistol and very accurate will give you no reason for follow up shots,thus a single shot would be fine.

I like my 1701Ps a lot better than my 1720Ts due to better balance and lighter weight.

I have a Lothar Walter barreled PP700 and it's the most accurate one I have but still prefer the 1701Ps.

Aftermarket grips are great!

They used to be like only $20 only few years ago on eBay!

I like the Steve Corcoran grips the best if you can find them and from Vernon Austin too.

I have a crazy wild hair idea to convert a 177 Benjamin Fortitude into a pistol just for the multi shot. I wonder if the Fortitude upper will bolt right onto the 1701P?

Another thought is to use a P-Rod and convert it into a 177 and 3d print the magazine for 177. Citrus Airguns used to convert to 177s but am unsure if they are still doing it. The Lothar Walter barrel will need that o-ring channel inside the barrel leade though.

There's also Exclusive in Thailand and not 100% sure if their side lever multi shot breech would work.

Thanks everyone, fantastic info and totally sold on the 1701!!! I love my 1720 in carbine form, definitely didn’t not like it in pistol form. 


the grips look awesome but sadly it looks like a long wait for EVERYTHING!!! Good thing I like my PP700 still! Hahaha 



btw I asked exclusive from Thailand if their action would work with 1720 and they said it’s 22 only, such a bummer!

The Fortitude breech does not match the 1701P or 1720T air tubes due to different bolt locations. 
The Prod breech will fit on a 1701P tube however. Has a SST installed in the picture but typically shoot with a magazine. The Williams WGRS 54 rear sight is tall enough to see over the magazine. Replace the peep sight with a notched blade. DonnyFL Benjamin adaptor and a threaded TKO keeps it backyard quiet and neighborhood friendly. Does 15-16 fpe for 16 shots. TKO is small enough in diameter to to block the iron sights which is my preferred way to shoot pistols.
the Prod and 1720T are pistols in name only IMO and I only shot them as carbines. I built the what I call the BP2202P to complement my Prod. I love the Crosman/Benjamin platform for its interchangeability.

+1 on Vernon Austin grips. I have 4 sets. Never had Steve Corcoran grips but heard good things. I have a set of DB Webb grips on a 2300KT and they are pretty nice too. FYI every time I ordered from Veron he always said he’s backed up. He’s lead time will vary depending what laminate or wood you order and what he has in stock. Always got my orders in about 6 weeks or so.
