Critter alarm mod!

First off, this whole concept of getting an alarmed sensor from the local Harbor freight isn’t mine. It has been suggested a few times on these forums, and to the folks that put this suggestion out, I want to thank them. This post is just me modifying it.

Currently, if you head down to your local harbor freight, armed with your coupon booklet, these can be had for a bit over $9 till the end of this month. Normally, they are almost $15. I picked up two for that sweet price.

For those that that don’t know, in the box you’ll find a separate sensor that works off of a 9v battery. It is made to be out in the weather, the battery compartment has an O ring seal. The second piece is the receiver, that gives you two options to hear the alarm once the outdoor sensor picks up movement(up to 400’ away), and all that is is a low volume alarm and a high volume. 3 LED lights simultaneously flash on for a second when first turned on. This receiver takes 3 C batteries, and by the way, batteries are not included with the purchase of this thing.

so, what some have done, to get rid of the alarm feature, is open it up(6 screws) and cut a wire to the speaker to disable the alarm. So, from now on, all you will see is a flash of the LED’s once the outside sensor detects movement. I like the alarm feature, but when you have a wife that uses her ears for a living and has super woman hearing to begin with, you disconnect the speaker.

But, I like the alarm feature, when she’s gone off to work, so I installed an inline switch. There’s not a lot of room inside the receiver, as the battery compartment and the electrical board take up a lot of space. So I headed off to my local ACE hardware in search for a low profile toggle switch.

So, here is the toggle switch I chose. Second pic shows the inside of the unit with my one wire cut from previous. If you look just to the left of the circuit board you have about a 5/8” gap between the edge of the circuit board and the battery compartment housing.

In the third pic, two screws removed the circuit board, and my sharpie mark shows drill location.

Drilled out a 1/2” hole, attached the toggle switch. Prior to installing the toggle switch I soldered in a length of wire(#16 was the smallest I had) at each terminal of the switch, and after I installed the switch, carefully soldered the new wire on to the cut ends of the speaker wire. Taped off the connections, and tucked all the wires neatly into the rest of that 5/8”cavity.

As it turned out, I’m glad I chose that location, as it’s close to the side with the sliding ON switch of the receiver. Now, I can choose to disable the alarm, or flip the alarm back on. Very simple mod.

@ Athomas- that one from Amazon is actually a pretty good deal. Looks almost identical to this harbor freight one, but as you said, you have the option to turn sound on/off while mine didn’t.

@ WiseGuy- yes, the first night I had it out, the lights flashed intermittently 3x, and I went to check, and it’s rats running along the tops of my fence and crossing my sensor placement.

I like it! Just to share a slightly different scenario, I need the audible on mine because I have to keep the receiver in a window (out of my view), otherwise it’s too far away from the transmitter. But even the low alarm setting is really loud, louder than I want when it goes off at night and the wife and kids are asleep. I’m planning on opening it up to see about attenuating it with a resistor.

Meanwhile I was just going to suggest one other thing. On the transmitter, I don’t like the little front panel LED advertising itself to the night time critters so I opened it up and clip the wire. Could have just put a piece of tape over it but ditching the LED makes the 9V battery last longer.

From my experience with cats possums fox raccoons and skunks, it doesn't seem to effect them in any way. Haven't had any experience with rats. Basically they ignore it because they still come into my yard. I did put a piece of black electrical tape over the led at the bottom on mine. Besides that cutting the wire to the led doesn't help. When I go out to check to see if they are functioning the led helps. Otherwise I would have to take the base station out with me.

Same on mine, only lights when triggered. Some night time critters can be spooked by it, rats for example.

I'm glad to hear some of ya'll are getting good results with these. I picked one up thinking it would help me when I'm still hunting for raccoons at night, to alert me when something is at the feeder. I've had possums and raccoons walking around in front of it and it didn't go off. It goes off when I walk in front of it, but not smaller critters. I think I just got one that isn't as sensitive as I need. I will get another and try again. I also cut the speaker wires and taped over the LED light. I like the idea of using a switch, though. Thanks for that!
