Crazy Trajectory @309y in the Wind

I snuck out to my shooting spot this morning with my Crown. I had some testing objectives with my 380mm barrel, but finished early in the day so I threw on the 700mm barrel to have some fun. The wind was blowing 15-25mph (pretty standard for this location), but I got the itch to do some long range shooting since the sun was still overhead and not in my eyes.

I ran out of paper targets, and there were a couple of warm 2L bottles of orange Fanta in the back seat of my sedan that were leftover from a BBQ yesterday evening. I grabbed one of them and set it up as far out as I was comfortable with, knowing that I'd have to navigate the brush to retrieve it afterwards.

Anyways, I got back to my shooting position and ranged the bottle - 309y. I loaded up a mag of 30gr VKs and did some quick tuning over my LabRadar to get the power up. My GW was only partially full when I drove out, so I set the velocity to 950fps to get about a full mag's worth of shots on the ~210bar fill. I consulted Strelok for the elevation (55MOA lol), and then I took a few shots in an attempt to kick up some dirt near the target to determine my rough wind hold.

On the 6th shot at the bottle, I see orange soda spewing out of both sides as if the bottle was shot from the side!!! I sat there for a moment happy about the hit and started to try to piece together how in the hell the trajectory came at it with such a wide hook. The orientation of the bottle was the same as it was while I shot at it. I trekked back over to the target to inspect the damage. Sure enough, the slug penetrated clean through nearly center mass. I took a photo of the bottle from the point of the exit hole - aiming my camera at my shooting area (you can make out my sedan next to where I was shooting from in the distance). The final trajectory angle of the bullet looked to be AT LEAST 30 degrees! Is that not crazy or what?!

On the 6th ??what?? At the bottle lol paragraph 4 1st sentence . If that was the case maybe the pellet was deflected by a piece of corn ! Incredible shot though :)

@TarheelScott - Haha!!! Wow, yeah that was probably the result of having added the word "poop" to my iPhone's built in dictionary, my attempt at overriding typing autofail (which apparently backfired lol). Thanks

Thanks for keeping our woods clean mtnGhost btw nice shot , it took me awhile to find your rig but I did . Good luck with your shooting Darell

Yeah, it's my moral duty anytime I'm out there. I try and leave the area cleaner than it was before I got there. I picked up close to 200lbs of garbage and brass at that spot alone this past spring :/

I'll buy it. I've watched .177 rounds hook into targets at 55yd in 15-20mph winds with 8+ inches of hold off.

I think there's going to be similar wind there over the weekend. I'll probably get the itch to shoot out even further to figure out the realistic limits are with this Crown setup (hopefully I do t run out of real-estate trying!). When I do, I'll throw on my 7-35 ATACR with the SideShot.. I can't seem to get any decent long range footage using my 3-24 March, but the NF renders fine. I might also be tempted to setup a second camera in front of the target, but I'd probably have to rig up a WiFi AP in DC power to control the recording feature from 3+ football fields away 😂 If I do that, I want to set it up from the side of the target to try and capture the POA better.
