Counterfeit scopes on eBay
I’ve been looking for scopes in every nook and cranny I can think of, and low and behold, I find incredibly cheap ZEISS scopes on eBay (Fleabay as my friends call it!)
Some things about the scopes just don’t look right though. It’s just too good to be true for starters.
So, I contacted Zeiss and asked a few questions about how to spot a counterfeit. They said things like:
Red/green Illuminated reticles. They’ve never manufactured red/green IR

- Look for where the scope is shipping from. If it says Assembled in USA, and it ships from Hong Kong, it’s probably a fake.
- Do your homework on magnifications. Many of the counterfeits are in magnifications Zeiss never manufactured.
- The lettering on real Zeiss scopes is very fine and somewhat subtle. The counterfeits may be in extremely bright white, very in your face, and rough around the edges.
- Price – if you see a Zeiss scope for a Buy it Now at $150, you know something is wrong.
- They proudly display the Zeiss trademark, but specify it’s a CLONE in the description hoping you won’t notice
- Zeiss serial numbers never started with a "6". Don't know how that helps buying on Fleabay, but that came from Zeiss.

My personal favorite is when the vendor claims the scope was made specifically for the Asian market, and Zeiss USA doesn’t know about the scope so don’t contact them for Warranty repairs, return to the vendor.
If buying, do your homework. Just 'cause it's marked Zeiss, doesn't mean it is.
