IMO, .30 cal and up are just not for plinking, unless you're sponsored or have a bit of disposable income. I have a few .30 and larger guns, and they are for hunting. I sight them in, maybe try out some new ammo from time to time, and otherwise, they stay in the safe until just before a hunt. Then, I pull them out, check to make sure they're zeroed and working proper, then go hunt.
.22 and .25 are for plinking and light duty hunting. As mentioned, with 3+1 at PA with a coupon sprinkled on top, even .25 can be had at plinking prices (<$.04). You can be really cost effective with .177, but they're too small for my fingers, and where I live, the wind is always blowing, so .22 is as low as I go.
But yes, flinging .30 and up takes some jingle.
