Contacted Sig Sauer CS Re: ASP20

Decided to call Sig and get the scoop on the ASP20. A couple reasons why they are discontinuing ONLY the ASP20. First one is centered on profit margin. They aren't getting the returns for this model based on the amount of investment they have in it. The second reason is on par with what I mentioned to AGN member Glenroiland in a PM. The machinery they use to make firearms is the same equipment they used to make the ASP20. They want to retool the machinery used to make the ASP20 so it can go back to firearm manufacturing. The 5 year warranty will still be honored as long as they maintain parts. Which tells me they aren't going to continue producing parts. Kind of sucks ! Ten, fifteen, twenty years from now if your ASP20 breaks down it might be nothing more than a conversation piece. And no, they still aren't going to offer parts to the public.

This news will make me baby it a lot more to try to keep it as pristine as possible

Probably what I would do if i still had mine. Shoot less - and look at more.

What a waste of a gun.h

Not really, that's like saying only driving your fancy car 5K a year is a waste of the car. ;-)

I bought the last two a couple of weeks ago and in a moment of weakness I listed them for sale. I had a bid on ebay but canceled the sale as I decided to keep. Removed the listing from here and other airgun forums.

And yes ,it is the best springer I have personally ever shot even better than my tuned by John in PA rws 54.

Funny side note, the amount of hate mail I received on ebay ( apparently it was listedtoo expensivefor them?). One wrote " you are a funny guy" another wrote " I hope you never sell at that price". Obviously I did not respond and low myself into the gutter.

In any case I wish I had more time to properly do a video review but I have lots of things going on lately. Bottom line is I love them ( I bought 2).

Took my son to a local farm and ranch store (Murdoch's) last night after baseball practice. While there we went to the rifle and hanggun section to pick up some targets and pellets as they also deal in Airguns and Air Rifles. This is the store he bought the .177 version of the ASP20 with synthetic stock last year, had they had a .22 caliber one at the time he would not have purchased the .177. Well needless to say he was not impressed with the .177 so with my blessings he sold it and made back all but $25.00.

While there we noticed that they had two ASP20's on the shelf, the last time we were there after his purchase in September we had bought one of the two .177 they had on the shelf. Noticing this curiosity my son checked them them out again. All I can say is his face litup and he had that quiet now what do I as he wave with his arm to get my attention. There sitting on the shelf was what he was looking for the long out of stock .22 caliber ASP20 with synthetic stock, no scope priced at the manufactures suggested retail price of $399.00.

I told my son if he gave me what he had left of the money he got back on the sale of his former .177 ASP20 I would buy it for him, he said sure thing. We took it up to the counter and while checking out the salesman said they were gald to see another one of these leave the store as they were way to expensive to sell when sitting next to the much cheaper Benjamin Nitro somthing? and Gamo Swarm Fusion.

I asked him when they got more of these in as the .22 caliber had been out of stock for a long time. The salesman told me they didn't get more, this one had been returned to the store unopened/unused with sales receipt so they we able to take it back. The salesman said the old rancher just never found the time to use it and could not justify the expense of keeping it in the box. I told my son he was lucky to find this one and to take care of it, never sell it as this made in the USA air rifle is no longer being produced and again he got it for $399.00, which just goes to show with a little luck and patience you may still be able to find them at a local store.

As for a scope not a problem, as an early birthday present I gave him a Hawke Airmax scope that I had planned on using on my Beeman Santa Rosa .20 R1.

I bet they start the ASP20 up again later. Demand for airguns is very high, and the ASP20 seems to be popular. All the engineering has been done.

I thought about that as well. If they do a 2nd generation version it's going to cost more. At first, you could find the wood versions for $399 with free shipping. Maybe they'll just design a totally new model. Kind of funny that none of their C02 airgun production is effected.

Great story ! I would have tried to talk him down on the price a little. Maybe $20 or at least $10. Might be worth the effort in contacting Sig and see if they'll now part with a set of scope rings they used for the Whiskey3 combo. The cross pin on these mounts is square instead of round. They fit the picatinny notches of the scope base much better. As far as scopes go, my .22cal Sig killed a Hawke Airmax scope within 50 shots. Hawke replaced free of charge but I never put the new one back on the rifle. Instead, I went with a $83 (price at time) UTG scope that performed flawlessly on the rifle. Same scope had no problems on my RWS 34 either. A pic of that scope. Congratulations on finding a .22cal ASP20. Keep us posted. If you need pellet preference information let me know.

GoldenStateAIRGUNer,

Oh I tried to get him to come down on price, salesman said he could not do it, but suggested I call the regional managers office to see if they would make an after purchase adjustment. I left a message this moring with that office and waiting on a return call at this time, I hinted in my voice message if they would provide a discount I may even consider getting the last .177 they have.

Thanks for the heads up on the issue with the Hawke Airmax scope if used on one of these, looks like it will be going on my R1, and ring suggestion as well, the rail is better suited for more picatinny mount and no so good for weaver mount (slot fit sloppy). I have looked at the UTG line every once in a while when thinking of upgrades. The only reason I even considered giving my son the Hawke scope was based upon looking at reviews and sales input last night that said it was suited for use on the ASP20.

As for pellets yes it would be great to get input/suggestions as to what may work best.

Since the rifle was returned I'd still consider it used. Be nice if you could get a discount.

Pellets that shoot well in the Sig ASP20 are listed below. Keep in mind there probably are others.

Air Arms. 16 gr dome LEAD

Sig Crux. 14.66 gr. dome LEAD & HARD TO FIND.

Sig Venom. 14.5 gr. dome LEAD

Sig Wraith. 12.35 gr. (Actually weight 13.3 gr) ALLOY

GoldenStateAIRGUNer,

Finally had time to give an update on my sons new ASP20. First the District Manager authorized a $95.00 refund on my sons purchase. He listened to my explanation of why a lower price was warranted and agreed that even though someone took it back as an unused item, it should not have been the case. This was based on my providing him with pictures that indicated the box was re-taped by someone with clear tape put over the original than Sig Inspection tape (this rifle came in the brown Sig cardboard box, with proper foam cutout packing, not the yellow and white box). It still had the manual and adjustment tool in a small zip lock type bag. I don’t know if the box indicates an early production or later run rifle.

Second, my son loves this rifle, I think he put a full 500 JSB round through it tonight before I got home, to my surprise the Hawke survived the shakedown, it would not have been on his rifle had I known about the potential issue last night. It is off now and with the refund I ordered the recommended UTG scope.

This rifle regardless of baffling is loud not bad but loud but this is the right caliber and exactly what one 15 year old boy wanted from the beginning and he got lucky to find one new or used. When getting the refund the salesperson said it had been back in the store for about a month.

As for the .177 it is still there, the District Manager said they may ship it back to their warehouse so that it can go to a region where sales are better for that caliber.

Awesome ! $95 of is one sweet deal ! Congratulations! Just because my Hawke didn't survive doesn't mean every Hawke of this model wouldn't either. Regarding pellet choice, mine wasn't that crazy about JSB pellets but airguns are like people. We're all different. Glad he likes it. You have a chronograph to what kind of numbers it's putting out ?

GoldenStateAIRGUNer,

We will be doing chrongraph on it this weekend this weekend. I was worried about the JSB pellets but they work for now. One of the reasons we ended up at that store a couple of days ago was looking for pellets, they are the only ones that sold Sig Branded pellets which worked great in all my .177 rifles. Will be doing some online shopping for pellets that are better than the readily available Crosman ones in .177 and .22.

The Sig branded Venom pellets do pretty well. Sig designed the gun with the Whiskey3 scope using the Crux lead @ 14.66 gr. They were extremely accurate but hard to find now. The Sig Wraith alloys are also very accurate in this gun. Tom Gaylord shot very good groups with this pellet at 25 yards. Airgun Depot (Travis) also shot his best group with this pellet. Don't know if you watched this video
