Concerning galling on weihrauch rifles with articulated cocking arm

Hello everyone,

A while ago I made a post about the hw30 asking about the galling issue that has been mentioned by some people.

I just wanted to ask; is this issue present on every rifle with an articulated cocking arm that weihrauch produces?

I have read mostly about the hw50 and very few people have mentioned the hw30 and the hw35 having the same issue.

Weihrauch has also made a plastic insert for the hw50 (and maybe even the 35?) which supposedly helps eliminate the issue

The plastic insert is also recommended by some people as an after market modification in order to help eliminate the galling issue. Despite this, some say that it works, others say that not only doesn't it work it actually shifts the problem elsewhere.

So what is the rule here? (If there is one). Meaning, does the plastic insert work correctly or does it make things worse? Does every model with an articulated cocking arm have the galling issue? Is galling that big of an issue in the first place (friction between metal surfaces is kind of inevitable when it comes to break barrels).

I'm really sorry if the questions seem repetitive or if they have already been answered. I just feel a bit overwhelmed with analysis paralysis and having no previous experience whatsoever with any of these rifles, I thought it would be a good idea to ask for input from people that have experience.

Thanks in advance!!

whenever there an issue with something prone to galling a good treatment with some moly paste on the affected surfaces helps alot .. the stuff is nasty so do it right .. clean the parts with acetone to get them bare, then rub the moly in good, then wipe most of it off, then lube very lightly with something with teflon in it, but no solvents on a regular basis ..

It's really not that big a deal...IMHO!

Moly grease on the cocking slot will keep it shooting for years...and the area that sometimes has a little galling doesn't affect the performance of the rifle!!

I got a second hand HW30 a couple years ago that had been shot quite a bit with no lube and was galled up pretty good...did a disassemble smoothed it back out and lubed with moly grease!

My shooting buddy now owns that gun and shoots the crap out of it with no problems what so ever!!!

I also have a R7 in .20 that got a while back that I lubed right from the git go and have had not one problem...even with a Vortek HO kit installed!!!

So stop worrying your self to death and get one!!! Lol lube it up and shoot it!!! 😋

I see! Thing is weihrauch put a plastic insert back in 2013/14 if I recall correctly. This was supposed to somehow help with the galling issue. Does this thing work? Also what seems to be interesting is that galling is most often reported on the hw50. The hw30 and the hw 35 are not mentioned that often (especially the hw35).

I have a pair of R7's in .177 and .20. The .20 is a Huntington Beach era rifle, about 16 years old at this point and no problems. The .177 was about a year and a half old when I got it gently used 2 months ago and doesn't either. Will it happen at some point? Anyone's guess and while I'll watch, wait and see, it's also not something I'm going to go getting totally OCD about...lol.

I was also considering an hw35e, the one with the new walnut stock... It seems like a really awesome rifle... classy vintage sovereignty... but the galling issue actually holds me a bit back as i don't really have any experience in terms of tinkering with air rifles internally should the need ever arise.

I wouldn't. Several have already said an easy fix and one you can do by simply removing the stock screws is to put a light coat of moly paste on those edges and shoot away.

Should the need ever arise, you belong to a forum with plenty of owners more than willing to help :)

True that's a fair point! I really appreciate the support and friendliness in the forum :D. One more thing that I wanted to ask; does the delrin/plastic insert that weihrauch implemented for the hw50 work/fix the galling issue? Some people say that it doesn't or that it made it worse. But a lot of people are in favor of the plastic insert as a fix for galling.

The Delfina/plastic insert sold by Jim Maccari at Air Rifle Headquarters addressed my concern for potential galling on my .177 Santa Rosa R7.

If not for anything else just for a little extra piece in mind, I also used a light coat of moly after installing the Delrin insert, all it does is glide really smooth over the tube, won’t look back on my decision as it works for what I wanted to achieve - protection from damage.
