Completely new to the sport and looking to purchase first gun

I appreciate the input. I guess being new to the sport I was looking for an air gun that can do it all for me. Of course I really do want to learn what I can. I’ll get into the sport and maybe work my way to getting a gun later for deer hunting.

Good decision. Obviously, large animals can be killed with a low power weapon, but that doesn't make it the right choice. Enjoy your air rifle for its intended purpose, and leave the big game for your firearms.

Birddog,

Charlie Frear's (Georgia Airguns) "Overstock Clearance" thread is currently on page two of General Discussion section, states all guns are $1,500 each. Just checked Krales (Netherlands) website, there are no Synthetic-stock Uragan Compacts available, but standard size synthetics are. Walnut-stocked Uragans are also for sale but higher price than synthetics. Standard synthetic-stock Uragans are $1,258. WM

WorriedMan,

I did call and leave a msg for Charlie yesterday. Two hours later he called me back and we talked for 25 mins. Gave me a lot of info. I understand Krales might be a little cheaper to buy from but I rather support a business in the US. Besides he goes through them thoroughly because he “never wants to see the gun back.” If there were any issues.

(just my input for deer hunting in Michigan)

if your looking to hunt deer u will need 35cal or bigger.. something makes 200fpe + for starting out there is a learning curve when it comes to hunting deer with a airgun. i have killed a lot of deer with a airgun and its nothing like using a powder burnner ..yes some times deer drop or only run a little but a bad shot and u wont find your deer. most the time you wont even find blood before u fine the deer. 25 and 30cal are great for coyotes and smaller game but to much risk when it comes to deer or the dnr who stops to check your gun ...

Birddog,

Certainly agree, it's your money, spend as you feel best. My "hobby" dollars are limited, so, have to watch carefully. Krales won't charge tax and shipping is very reasonable, agreed, the Import Duty is $66, but, the couple hundred in savings could go towards a scope, air compressor or a host of other "essentials." Best of Luck, WM

Good morning everyone!

If you would of told me that an airgun could hunt pigs and deer about a month ago, I would've laughed and been skeptical. Today, I am really intrigued and want to get into this sport. I am completely new to this sport and am looking to get my first gun. Actually my wife is buying me one for my 40th birthday in July but I need to find the one I want. I live in upper Michigan so I do not have access to any real dealer close. I have been doing some research and I believe I want a FX brand gun. I have been looking at the FX Impact M3 and the Maverick. For a new guy, what do you recommend? Also, what online dealers do you recommend if you have done business with? I see a lot about Utah Air guns and Pyramid Air.

I plan to use the gun for of course target shooting but also want to take down Whitetail Deer. So what caliber is the best for that? I have been thinking about .25 or .30.

Please any help or info would be great!

Thanks in advance,
Birddogcof

I don't know the hunting regulations in your state but if you hunt in close, if as a hunter you are able to stalk inside the 40-30 yards distance of a deer ( much like bowhunting ) both a powerful .25 or a .30 will take down any deer with a precise brain shot.

If you plan hunting from longer distances and using the Heart/lung shot I personally would go to .45 or .50 ( I love the .357 caliber and there's more ammo selection and much better price but I would take the extra hole size of .45 and .50 )

At that point I would look into a Texan for sure, the Carbon Fiber models are lightweight for hunting on the ground and very powerful,

and then I would get a nice .25 ( no need to go crazy on price you can get nice, accurate guns nowadays for a decent budget ) for your target practice and small game hunting.

You are going to need at least 2 rifles. If you want to deer hunt, you need a .45 or .50. Those are expensive to feed and use a lot of air. Some states set the minimum at .30 or .357, check your regs, but a bigger hole is generally better. You will want a .22 for plinking and small game. I recomend the .22 over a .25 because you can get pellets at Walmart. Go on Pyramyd's web sight and do some reading of Tomn Gaylord's blog. He will help cut through the advertising crap and get you to what you really need to be looking for.
