Comparisons just for the fun of it

Just got back into personal watercraft after a 20 year hiatus. Bought a new one last year and added some performance mods to it, looking at buying another one and a new double trailer this year. $$$$$🤑 I wish I could find an inexpensive hobby next.

Bigragu,

Sounds to me like you're in search of an argument you can make with someone who questions your spending on air guns and equipment. I think "It doesn't cost any more than golf" is a very good argument as long as you limit your capital investment to what you have described. Golf also makes a good argument because it has already been universally accepted by women as what husbands are going to do in retirement.

The investment in your scenario is higher than the investment in golf equipment but the cost to shoot, especially if you can shoot at home or at a friend's, is likely a lot less than the cost of a round of golf every weekend, cart rental, lessons, practice range fees, lost gloves, lost balls and money spent at the 19th Hole. All of those, with the exception of the clubs and bag, are sunken costs. You can also argue that your air guns and equipment may retain a higher percentage of their original value at resale than your custom fit golf clubs will. The math swings more in your favor the longer you stick to those three guns.

I think it's a wash.

Make the pitch. Sleep well my friend

p.s. I spend about $2,500 a year on duck club membership, ammo, travel, clothing, decoy and blind maintenance and that's cheap. That doesn't take into account wear and tear on my vehicle and the cost of two shotguns.

I appreciate all the feedback, guys. I know there was a tread in the Off Topic section that asks “Hobbies Other Than Airguns?” and it was not my intent to re create that topic. That was an awesome topic that went page after page, and man it sure has a lot of cool pics.

What I got out of this, and my opinion only, is cost wise this PCP hobby isn’t too bad on the pocket book. When you look at the great enjoyment it provides it truly isn’t bad at all. I’m going to go out on a limb and say, for a person two years invested into this, with around 4 pcp’s, 2 springers,(all 6 guns fully outfitted with scopes, slings, etc), a couple of air tanks, and a compressor mid range like the Air Venturi, this hobby is probably equal to an RC hobby, golf, and the weekend fisherman with a used aluminum boat and motor, but top shelf fishing rods, reels, and lures. It was good to see and read all replies posted for comparisons sake.

Lastly, After seeing some of the hobbies mentioned here, I also realized I haven’t lived my life to the fullest, ha ha! No joke, I asked myself what the heck have I been doing all my life, and looking back, all my $$ and time went into remodeling my home from the age of 33 to 50. I also recall back then when people used to ask me what my hobby’s were, I would say remodeling and building things. Not complaining, as I’m glad my house is all done, but I wanna toast up a beer to all of you that have taken your passions to the highest level. Kudos to you.

R1LOVER- just received your pm and read your reply above.

i wondered about that, if someone would think I was looking for “ammo” (pun intended, lol) to use in an argument, should someone try and tell me I spend too much on this hobby. Let’s see, would it be the Mrs? No, actually, as she’s been very supportive. Would it be a couple of my numbskull buddies that are big into golfing? No, cause we’ve had this discussion before, and once it came out that they recently spent almost a grand on a couple of clubs, they realized that they too, had a costly hobby.

Yes, so I had no hidden agenda in starting this tread. I was actually really curious, as this is my one and only hobby right now. It was reloading and getting set up for long range target shooting with centerfire cartridges, and of course, hunting, but I set those hobbies aside till I get my health and back condition in better shape. I, for one, can’t do multiple hobbies, which is why I’ll never get into melting lead for making slugs That’s a hobby on top of this one, and it will deter from my love of Airguns. I’d rather sit behind a pcp tethered to a tank, over a cup of coffee, all day every day, than sweat over molten lead pot hoping and praying that this next cast of slugs “will finally be the ones”

All thing considered, shooting airgun is actually not that expensive... even if you like Steyr/Daystate/FX...

- I'm not as addicted as some other folks on this forum. I seem to go through 5,000-10,000 177 pellets a year, so that's $300 ?

  • Dual sport motorcycles... $5K-$6K for a bike (every few years), another $1K is riding gears (every few years), another $1k in tires/chain and sprockets/misc, then there's the insurance, government fees, gas $$
  • Open water rowing... $5K-$6K for a boat, another $1K for oars, plus trailer to move it around...
  • Target shooting, whether it be bullseye, long range, trap & skeets...
  • Archery, as the $ to get into... but somewhat cheaper in the long run. As you can re-use the same arrows over and over...
  • Thank god I'm no longer into classic cars...

To me the biggest advantages to airguns, is that I can enjoy at home, a fun hobby that is shared by the wife... and that's worth a whole lot.

I think your time frame is a little short for most people to be serious about a hobby to compare investment. Most people have a fairly stable amount of fun money per month/year. So my thought would be average person 2 years into air guns has 2-3 lower to mid priced guns, air tank, scopes, and a few other small essential items and expendables(pellets etc). Is eyeing a compressor and a more expensive gun in the next year or so. So on the high side $2000 or $1000 per year. But a fishing boat, atv, classic car, etc all are going to have a initial start cost of minimum start cost of $4000 so for the first 2 years airguns are a bargain. But 4 years down the road all bets are off as to what airguns are costing per year.

How about photography? A top of the line DSLR will run you $2500 or more and thousands more for lenses, flash, light meter, printer, paper, ink, software and countless accessories.

I use this (photography) as an example of cost when I justify my airguns to her. Then she pulls the “well, you bought them for me” line right back. Ha ha! Anyway, all of my Airgun stuff doesn’t add up to her photography equipment price tag but I’m getting closer. 😳

Even with the money spent on PCP supplies, air gunning is the least expensive hobby I have been in. The worst part of my other hobbies is that stuff wore out or crashed and had little or no resale value four or five years out. A European air gun will always have a reasonable resale value.

I have R/C cars that I have close to $800 each into that I can't get $250 for now. Motorcycle racing I stopped counting after 10K and I raced several years after that. With R/C airplanes and helicopters, no matter haw many I planted in the ground, no new ones ever grew back;)
