Cometa Orion Mini BP low down

My dad confiscated my BSA Ultra SE .177 and at first it didn’t bother me. For the last two years I have been chasing speed, power and slugs. It is getting old so when I decided I needed a break and just wanted to plink without feeling like I am shooting a rimfire firearm. I decided I needed another .177. I also wanted something different. Nothing against Edguns or Taipans but it’s the same old same old with those guns. I decided on the Orion BP Mini Regulated. Cost me $700 and a decent wait. Then a paranoid unboxing because it came directly from Spain. Rubber gloves and some Clorox wipes and I was good to go. The Lane reg was all over the place at first. I did find out the gun will shoot over 1,000fps with 10.5’s when the reg was trying to find it’s happy spot. I also noticed the gun had some serious hammer bounce. I built a SSG and the gun settled in at 850fps with 10.5gr Crosmans. I tore the gun apart and found the transfer port was too small. The TP in this gun has a little brass insert on the end that goes to the barrel. I pulled the insert and put the tiny little thing in my lath and drilled it to 3.4mm. I also had to drill my barrel. Now I am right around 900fps with 10.5’s. Tonight I tested Crosman 10.5’s, JSB 10.3’s, H&N 10.65’s and 15.5gr slugs at 35yrds. All were good. The Crosmans and H&N were really good. The gun was a little loud when I got it so I had a piece of CF tube left over from my Priest project. Wouldn’t you know, it was the exact diameter I needed. I went to work on my lathe and made the same silencing components I used in my Priest, then installed them in the shroud. It’s pretty quiet now and I didn’t make a short gun long by hanging a can on the end of it. The trigger brakes clean on the second stage but getting to the second stage is a little gritty so I have to figure that out. I also still have to do a complete shot string. It’s only a 200b fill and it appears the reg is set at 110b. The gauge in the rear displays reg pressure and it has a fill pressure gauge on the end of the tube. Here are some pics.

Excellent choice! Cometa hammer-forges their barrels, so I know you'll be able to squeeze a lot of accuracy out of the Orion. I'm surprised it was running so anemic but that's easy enough to remedy. I wish they were still sold with the original bullpup stock (had a separate wood handle and a stock similar to the original Matador) as I find the current stock overweight and underpretty. And I bet you can find some info on stoning the trigger surfaces to remove the grit. IIRC, a search on Orion Trigger used to provide some results but I haven't looked in a couple years. How far will you be shooting with this pup once settled in?

Now why'd you use Clorox wipes? Soap and water is more effective, and no germs are gonna survive travel by slow-boat across the pond :)

Was shooting at 50yrds today. Not disappointed at all. Very accurate. The stock ergonomically is very comfortable. Where it curves down to the trigger guard makes a very nice place for my support hand. I can pull it into my shoulder for stability. Looking like around 60 shots with 10.5’s going 900fps. As the weather improves I will move to my bench and stretch the gun out and see where it goes south. Right now I am shooting out of my window winter range which goes out to 50yrds.

My buddies full size Orion is extremely accurate so I had a feeling Cometa had something figured out with their barrels. So far I am not disappointed. I knew the rear bolt action would take some getting used to but a guns accuracy trumps the way I have to cock it. The guns size and design makes cocking it very easy. I shoot, then with my hand still on the grip, extend the gun out in front of me like a pistol, cock it. When on a shooting bench, I just lean back. Seeing as how I don’t shoot Cape buffalo or lions with my airguns, I am not overly concerned with quick follow up shots.
