Close Range Pesting... danger close!😷

I don’t claim to know much about ratting. But when I first started I had some rats so close, that a bayonet would’ve served well. So my expensive PCP rifles were useless for rats 10 yards and in. Enter the pp700sa which has taken hundreds of rats from 5 to 25 yards. At one particular dairy I can set up for 40 to 50 yard shots on some rats. But that’s the exception. In practice most of these pests are too close to shoot with my rifle setups. My latest rat kill was at sub 10 yards. I started with an Crosman 1377 and am rediscovering how effective low power pesting can be. Particularly at sub 25 yard distances.

In my experience over the last two years around the cow barns most shots are from 20 yards all the way in to heel stomp close. The Leshiy in .177 sub 12 has been my go to. I had purchased a HW44 but soon realized I’d rather single load the Leshiy with a pellet pen than risk dropping a magazine in the muck.

They have also infiltrated the equipment yard a half mile up the road from the barns. There my shots range from 15 to 100 yards. My weapon of choice being the SK-19 with Thor lt thermal scope.

I have found that the Benjamin Fortitude is a very competent ratter and inside pest bird eliminator. I have it tuned @ 14 fpe and it is accurate to 45 yds or so.

At 4 yds. the holdover is 3 mil dot but this one didn't know what hit him. Anything outside of 40 or 45 yds and I switch to my Condor SS.

A couple years ago my (now ex) wife came running in from the garage saying, "There's something big and SCARY out there, and it just ran behind the refrigerator!" Figuring it probably a mouse or rat, I grabbed my 1911 semi-auto airsoft pistol and a flashlight. Though only producing a fraction of one foot-pound muzzle energy, at point-blank range (aka- "danger close!"), a couple rounds of plastic BBs in the head/neck area did the deed just fine.

In other words, I've now taken the most dangerous game in human history... with a handgun! (of sorts)

Yes Dave, it certainly took superhuman courage beyond what most men could muster to eliminate that threat to human civilization with a handgun... but unfortunately it's the closest I'll ever get to my dream of pursuing Griz or Brown Bear with a pistol. Matter of fact for years I had a .50 Desert Eagle when it seemed my dream hunt might be possible, but sold it when it became obvious that was only a pipe-dream. Nowadays I'd be lucky to afford the reloading supplies to load .50 Action Express ammo! Thankfully I can still afford airsoft BBs.

A few more "danger close!" photos of airsoft handgunnery hunter success against man-killing dangerous game; the last Man Killer stopped in full charge as it bore down on my (drunkenly) defenseless brother. Thankfully I was armed with the proper tool for the job... and was slightly less intoxicated!
