Best bet for the money is a boresnake for .17 HMR barrels. Mine shares a home now between my HMR and my air rifle. They can be found at many online retailers and many brick-and-mortar outlets under $20.
Next best option is either the weed-eater line or the Umarex cleaning kit from Walmart which I also own. It's a plastic-coated braided pull-line that works well. As others have said, pull through the breech to toward the muzzle. This applies to both firearms and airguns alike, period.
