Chronograph recommendations?

I have a 10+ year old Shooting Chrony chronograph that has seen better days. I'm interested in getting a new chrony but haven't paid much attention to newer chronys that have hit the market. I'm hoping there is something equally accurate without the need to assemble little rods, covers, lights, etc and has a larger area to shoot across. What do folks recommend nowadays ?

I have a shooting crony, last I looked they weren't much over a hundred bucks. If you shoot outdoors under cloudy days you do not need the diffuser which is the little rods and cover I believe you are talking about. I use mine probably once every month or so for maybe 2 or 3 guns with maybe +/- 10 shots from each one. I usually get reliable, repeatable results.

If you feel the need to document every shot there are probably better units, but for the person who just wants to check an adjustment or see how your guns are doing, the crony is not a bad choice. Like a lot of things, you do need how to "make it work". It's not the kind you just shoot a projectile over, anywhere, anytime, a little high, a little low, maybe to the right, maybe to the left and expect to get good results. Garbage in, garbage out.

Order from who?

Why are you having a hard time finding it? A little google search I came up with a few. You know how to use google right?

Is the FX available? it says 'preorder' at Utah airguns website.

Attaching to the barrel of a PCP seems easy/ What about a springer? I use my chony with my springers as much as my PCPs. Cocking the barrel with that chrony strapped on would seem awkward and have to check the placement before each shot...?

The FX is very good, wahoowad

I agree however that it may be awkward keeping it aligned when cocking break barrels.

I've not tried that, yet.

However, I believe that long shot strings are not needed when determining pellet speed/energy of spring or nitro-piston rifles

Also, one can shoot over it; as was the original intent when the FX was introduced into the marketplace

BTW

Pyramyd lists the FX as "in stock"

IMO it would be prudent to ask if the unit will come with the new barrel attachment or if that will be a separate phone call to FX- USA

I have been happy with my Competition Electronics ProChrono DLX. This type of device is clunky and you have to add the lighting kit for indoor use. Their app works well. The company was very responsive to suggestions that I had on the app.

To me, it was dishonest and off-putting that FX launched their Chronograph product with Giles doing a "review" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ry5XvTHajas and did not disclose that he was part of the development process. That video, btw, showed measurement error of 1.63% (3x the 0.5% claimed by ProChorno DLX). 980 fps * 1.63% = 16 fps which might be enough noise to mask the signal you are trying to measure. FX makes no claims of accuracy for the product on their website. This doesn't make it a creditable measurement device.

Thanks @bandg for reminding me that I should have read the original question more carefully.

  1. Labradar with the external microphone (Steve aka AEAC uses it for all his recent videos).
  2. MagnetoSpeed V3 (the cheaper Sporter model does not work with airguns, but you may be able retrofit it with extra magnets to make it work). It rarely gets mentioned.
  3. Combro CB-625 Mk4. I haven't seen anyone talk about this one for a while. Their website say they currently only ship within the UK, so maybe that has something to do with it. I seem to recall you had to reset it per shot, plus the display is on the side which is not exactly ergonomic.
    [/LIST=1]

Labrador determines speed at various distances for a given shot. With MagnetoSpeed and Combro you would need a 2nd chronograph to determine speed at target if that matters to you.

I haven't tried the Labradar. But I have the Chrony, Combro Mk4 & MagnetoSpeed V3. Have just ordered the FX unit. There are other chronographs out there, but I have enough now...

Combro works fine but best suited to non-PCP, found the pressure from a PCP blast can penetrate the unit displacing the sensors ever so slightly. Eventually resulting in error state. As for non-OS shipping, I suspect this is because it is too hard to deal with people OS. Fundamentally it works as expected and is good value for the money on springers.

The MagnetoSpeed V3 can work with pellets down to .22 by adjusting the sensitivity. But the communication between the display and phone is primitive. Uses 3.5mm cable male connectors and a supplied dongle. Can only get to function by using Apple specific cable (3cm long, $15Au) third party cables longer seem to create signal problems. Apple also seems to check if cables are theirs or not. MagnetoSpeed seems to have stagnated as a product, as at today. THe display unit swallows 9v batteries as though they are junior burgers form Macca’s...Software lets it down, can only e-mail uploaded results when comms work. Haven't been able to get it to work with my iPad even using an Apple cable. Seems Siri keeps interfering when display is connected, assumes it is audio device connected.

The Chrony is the only one which works on all my rifles, but it has setup restrictions, ie. light & space.

Did some testing with my FX Impact using FX Radar on barrel fitting, which seems to come standard in Australia, a few days ago, exported to a spreadsheet, hopefully the testing comes out below. I use the term ring but it should be read as one rotation of the valve stopper, shooting JSB king heavy pellets 34.95gr. As it works with my iPad the velocities come up nice and large..

I bought my fx chronograph from utah airguns. It ships with the barrel mounting bracket which takes about 2 minutes to intall. I have had great success with the use of this cool device. I haven't compared it to another device since I don't have one handy. It has pretty much been spot on for my dreamline classic which came with a shot card with it at the time of purchase. I also compared it to my crossbow speed and also was right on. Yes, the labradar is going to give you more information from muzzle to downrange. That comes at a considerable cost. I
