Chipmunks have become a real problem on one of the neighboring farms. They’ve chewed through fuel tanks on the log splitters, destabilized stone footings and left holes around the shrubbery and in the lawn. Since 2015 I’ve shot around 100 of the critters. As long as they stay in the wooded areas they’re free to live a long and happy life. Unfortunately, this male decided to take up residence in the stone wall bordering the house and that sealed his fate. I shot him with my .22, Air Arms TX200, using H&N Baracuda Green 12.65 grain pellets at 25 yards. The approximate pellet velocity at 25yrds was 799fps with 17.9 ft/lbs. of energy. My first shot was a clean miss because I failed to follow through after squeezing the trigger. As chipmunks have the habit of doing, he stood up and started to chirp, so I reloaded and landed the second shot with deadly accuracy. You can see that I was shooting at a steep angle; the pellet entered his left ear and exited through his right shoulder. These tin pellets are harder than lead and penetration is often 100%.
