Cheap, Easy Homemade Spinner

I used to think that spinners had to have been one of the stupidest things I'd ever seen in my life. But I watched a couple of videos on Si Pittaway's YouTube channel last week where he was shooting a spring gun accurately at 65 yards; and he had made a spinner out of a spoon. I liked the idea of using a spoon, but I thought I could do better than his design.

So I looked around, and found some old 1/2" PVC pipe that's been laying around here for 20+ years. We had some pieces of it that weren't long enough to use for anything significant. A little further rummaging uncovered some caps that fit it. I had to go to the hardware store today anyway, so $3.32 bought 2 x 1 3/8" key rings, 2 x 90 degree angles, and 4 x T's.

It took about 20 minutes to put together. Much of that was drilling the holes through the spoons and deciding how long to cut the pipe sections. I made all that up on the fly.

I'm using some pipe fasteners, like what you use to fasten copper pipe to a wall or ceiling to hold the ring / spoons in place. I removed the nails that came in them, replaced them with screws, and modified the fasteners to work like clamps. But one could come up with any number of other ways to keep the ring / spoons in position. This is just what came to mind to me at the time. Even just some tape would work.

I did not glue the pieces, so it could easily be taken apart for more convenient travel or storage.

I thought I'd share this with all of you in case any of the rest of you like building things like I do. It works great! Glory to God.

I'm thinking of putting it in front of my pellet stop and trying it indoors. Do any of you have any thoughts or experience about this?

And thanks again to all of you for your help and support these past few months since I've joined in on these forums! It is appreciated.

i built one with 5 different sized spoons. i flattened the spoons with a hammer and as long as they spin freely, the pellets don't ricochet.

i did find if you use cheap dollar store spoons, no matter how well they spin, the pellets will bend them. i even had a pellet pass through a spoon when i shot it with my 15FPE Trail NP2 at 15 yards.

go to a garage sale or the Salvation Army Store and look for the old metal baby spoons, they're the smallest i could find.

Here's a simple one I did for the kids to shoot. Dollar store spoons bent around a piece of 1/4" all-thread. Bits of rubber hose to keep them spaced apart, and a simple U-shaped frame made from fence pickets. Less than $5 in materials.

It has held up surprisingly well with up 20fpe in .177 and .22. Every once in a while it takes a few hits at 25-30fpe, but one dose of 50fpe rotated a large spoon 90 degrees. Bent it back and it's still going strong.

In fact, now that I'm looking at the date on the photo, I made it Memorial Day weekend 2016. I still use it to this day for offhand practice at 25 yards. It has no doubt endured thousands of pellets over these 3 years.

Keep the pics coming, please, guys. The PVC spinner I made a few days ago looks like it is going to be great for what I intended it for, but now you guys have me thinking of making another!

I made the PVC one for scenario testing. When I go out on patrol, I go around to the various places on our land where the critters hang out. So most of my engagements occur in pretty predictable circumstances. And most of them occur with me shooting either uphill or downhill -- mostly downhill. I have very few engagements on level ground -- because we don't have much level ground here!

I thought I'd take this around to their hangouts and use this to try to get a better handle on what I need to do to make more effective kills at the various ranges and inclines. And the PVC pipe is feather light for this!

But now I'm thinking more in terms of indoor use, and the other pics posted have gotten me thinking more along the multi-spoon indoor use line.

When the spoons cause ricochets, I would think that most of the ricochets would be to the sides, or back and to the sides. Have any of you ever experienced them coming back towards the shooter?

What I'm trying to get at here is that I was thinking of putting whatever spinner I make in a box of some sort to contain any potential ricochets to keep me in harmonious cohabitation with the other members I live with here. How deep would that containment area have to be?

Pics and thoughts appreciated!

I’ve been meaning to make a spoon spinner for a while now, just haven’t gotten around to it. I always thought it was a cool idea, but didn’t realize the pellets would ricochet.

If it’s working for ya, great, nicely done, specially if they don’t ricochet! Make one out of wood, the first time you hit that PVC you’ll need a new one anyway.

I confiscated a garden flag holder similar to this one from my wife and hung spoons from it. I have also dipped spoons in a mixture of carpenters powdered chalk and water then let them dry. They make a neat "pop" of colored dust when hit. I had to scratch the spoon with sandpaper to get the chalk to stick. I just stuck the handles into the ground to stand them up.

The flag holder is similar to what inspired me to make my PVC spinner. The problem with it for me -- which is why I used PVC -- is that the ground here is so rocky and hard here you'd never be able to get it stuck in the ground deep enough to use it.

I don't think the PVC is likely to suffer much of a beating; but even if it does, because it's not glued together, any damaged parts could be easily replaced. Plus, they're short pieces anyway, so it wouldn't be a big deal. If worse comes to worse, I could slip a piece of pipe or conduit over the longer pieces.

I really like @Rodeo 's knock down set; though @nervoustrig 's spinner has its good points, too. Maybe I'll combine elements of both. I thought I was being smart using two spoons! I searched this site for ideas before I built mine but didn't turn up anything. Even a search of Google Images doesn't turn up much.

Thanks for the ideas, guys!
