Catch 22 with Power Tuned .30 Impact

This is an interesting problem that I ran into with the .30 FX barrel kit on my MKII. I normally torque down my barrel's set screw by feel to a certain point after cleaning it. When I was benchmarking my configuration, my barrel unseated and moved forward just under an inch from the block. After realizing this, I torqued it down a little more than usual, and after a while it popped out again.

Finally, I got to a point where it stayed put. I just made a mental note about it and carried on. When I removed the barrel, the forward o-ring on the brass inlet was nicked. I replaced it with another, but it felt as if it were raised higher than the breech-side inlet o-ring. Sure enough, I WARPED the stainless piece that the set screw clamps down on! It's toast, and I need another one now.

I modified a TJ barrel from a blank for my MKII. Originally, I had it sitting nice a tight in the block, but then I wound up removing just a tad more material on my lathe to make it the same size as the FX barrel kit. Sure enough, the barrel pops right on out when the power is turned up as soon as it gets somewhere north if 115FPE).

I'm starting to debate on how to fix this issue. It coincided with the colder weather here, which makes sense. I decided to keep my MKII in 25 cal, but even then - it's shooting over 100FPE and I suspect that this is going to be a common theme if I don't do something about it. I'm not real excited about the prospect of notching a dimple in the side of the barrel for harmonics and possible damage. I could try larger, drier o-rings, but that could be a nightmare.

Anyone have thoughts on this?

I had to read this twice but now I see what your saying. I dont have an impact, but I just fit a fx liner on to a different gun. Can you spot face where the set screws are and turn a shoulder on the set screw? I had to thread mine. Im not familiar with the impact but I made mine up pretty similar. Heres a pic. The top hole above the port is threaded for alignment so ignore that.

Because you are using the TJ barrel currently and it is a solid unit, I would drill a dimple for the set screw. You won't have any harmonic issue from that up there. When you get the new stainless steel piece from FX, depending on the thickness, you may be able to do the same. Mine has a circular groove wore in it from taking the set screw and barrel on and off and luckily hasn't moved with the reg turned up as high as 175.

Maybe get a different style set screw when you get the new part as well. Some are pointed and some have the circular groove as mine does.

You can remove just a bit on tj were the screw seats (double) that way the screw will lock the barrel. Or replace the lock screw? Never had a problem with my tj and where the screw seats is flat.

I think the screw might be the problem.

I'd put a dimple in the brass where the set screw holds it. Impacts should come that way from the factory.

The screw that lock the barrel seats over steal not brass on the fx barrel

I had to replace the knob w/set screw. That took care of my slippage. On the other hand have you see the double screw opposing on the new crowns. That will be a BIG improvement and an opposing screw would be an idea on the Impact.

I was thinking of this last night, and wondering why they don't have at least a double set screw set-up on there, They could pin it just as easily and make it even more safely secured.

Sorry man but this barrel retaining system FX came up for the Impact is downright !@#$%^

Twice now I've ran into shooters that have Impacts complaining of POI shifts, I show them that their barrel is loose via the poor retention system and of course they get angry but at least know what the problem is from them on.

If one were to look at examples in the firearms world, like how Desert Tech and Accuracy International did their quick detach barrel locking systems, that's the way you do it.

@steve123 - totally agree with you, there is room open for improvement. I'm a huge fan of the EdGun's barrel tensioning systems eith the Matador, Lelya, and even something like the Leshiy's tensioning system would work wonders.

That said, I'll have to get creative with this TJ barrel blank. The OD is .562" so I can machine it down I can get it nice and snug in the action and block. That might make the difference.

As far as the FX barrel kits go, I'm not real stoked about the prospect of a dimple, but I have plenty of center drill bits to work with and I know how to do it with precision. I just don't like the idea of it at all.

I have ordered one of these to fit on the end of the barrel sleeve to replace the barrel liner nut.

it will grip the liner firmly without damage or putting the liner under compression, It won’t help with your particular problem but it will stop the liner shooting out like a spear. Also I can install any length liner without the need to replace the sleeve.

Where did you order from and what is the cost, I'd like to read more about it please ?

,it’s an er16 collet Chuck, you can get these on flea bay for about $10, you will need the appropriate size collet for your barrel liner Dia and you will also need to bore out the back of the chuck to fit onto the sleeve. Once in place, slacken off the nut, slide out the liner, slide in new liner, tighten nut.

so reading this problems only happen when gun has power mods , does anyone know what Ernest does to lock barrels in on his h power MODS ? is it still a single screw? .I know in 2016 on my impact I used a rubber washer against frame and had drilled and tapped the thumb screw and put a small allen and it hit against the frame to hold things tight

Hi JW, donno, I might be an exception, and my experience limited , 2 Impacts only, but I have never had that problem, and I shoot 150 fpe out of SilverSurfer, and I have never touched that screw or the pellet probe screw either (but I shoot with the butpadd up JIC).
